Just What South Lake Union Needs—Flex Scooters

Primary Scooters
With all the construction, trolley tracks, and "Motorcycles Use Extreme Caution" signs around South Lake Union, this sounds like an accident (or numerous accidents) in the making. "Scoot About" is looking to become the ZipCar of the scooter market in South Lake Union.

Owner Susan Richardson will be testing out her business plan in July and August before officially launching the company. Members of "Scoot About" will pay $5 for every half-hour of scooter rental, plus the cost of gas after 10 miles. Before scooting off into the sunset, renters will have to take a scooter safety course, which will hopefully teach lessons like "avoiding the SLUT" and "how to not be killed by construction trucks entering the road."

Not a bad idea, seeing that the training is included, but a poor choice of neighborhoods, I think. SLU has the T - and is close enough to other transit options to making using the bus for running that errand fairly efficient, but what if you could get a flex scooter from, say, Greenlake or Phinney or my hood, West Seattle?

Plus, what you said about the traffic around there. It's often more efficient - and safer - to walk.

I like that idea in West Seattle. Alaska Junction would be pretty good.

I agree that the idea isn't a bad one, but it's all about location! A West Seattle scooter rental does sound like a great idea though--for running errands or for folks to troll and enjoy Alki with.

I will take advantage of this. I am active on the Skyscaper City forum and like to make a photographic record of the ongoing development here in town, but walking all over the place can be a real drag sometimes, especially during the winter.

Taking the car is even worse, as people get really pissed off when you just stop dead in traffic and start taking pictures of construction sites!
