Bad Economy Good for Some Businesses

If this was politics, we'd be calling spin all over King 5 for their story "Beer and candy booming in struggling economy."

According to the piece, while the rest of us may be making less than usual to be taxed more than ever, folks who make and sell beer and candy are doing just fine, thanks. While we drown our woe in a beer (or three) and gorge ourselves on candy, these businesses enjoy the spoils of our sorrow. The story goes as far as saying the folks over at Nielsen ratings and research list candy as a "recession-proof product." While beer isn't mentioned specifically, we bet brew is damn near recession-proof too.

The other business doing incredibly well in these lean times? The Lotto. An industry that fleeces folks more than it's ever helped anyone out--great. Spend money in the hopes against all statistics and mathematical odds you may win...something, anything.

Beer, candy, and lottery tickets. While that sounds like the makings of a good night in, it doesn't sound like the answer to the failing economy.

Oh yeah, bars and beer has always done well in a recession. Even during prohibition.

That and advertising and marketing. People still need to sell stuff. YAY recession proof businesses.

Those are the only ones I know about. Candy is new to me though.
