Honolulu Trash Coming To Washington?

According to the P-I, Honolulu's thinking about sending island-style trash our way. Walt Disney doesn't really tolerate landfill stench wafting over its new resorts, and there's only so much space on Hawaii for garbage (Walt Disney resort memorabilia aside), so companies are in the process of bidding for the privilege of hauling the refuse to a new mainland location. It's possible that Washington could be the trash's final resting place.

Our proposal is to instead send all of the trash generated by resorts on Hawaii to the tourists' year-round homes. It would be proportional: for every annual mile you fly to and from Hawaii, five pounds of trash from Honolulu would be yours to cherish in loving memory of your trip to island paradise.

No exceptions for wealthy people, and double the poundage for tourists staying at the Walt Disney resort. Trash would be shallac-able. Maybe public art using shiny Honolulu trash could be the new ironic Thing! True, it would be a logistical challenge, but at least it would be grimly satisfying for those of us who may or may not have ever had the chance to go to Hawaii ourselves.

Not that we're bitter.

But we are, a little bit. (Isn't it always sunny and warm in Honolulu?)

It sucks these issues can be decided by private contractors. Somebody gets to profit from polluting the ground water and the rest of us have to take it. No garbage is good garbage.

It's kind of our just deserts, considering Seattle's garbage all get loaded on a train and sent to Oregon.
