Safeco Field Turns Into Fenway West

You can read about last night's Mariners win in Kim's post from earlier, but the highlight was Jose Lopez's single in the bottom half of the 9th to drive in Balentien and end the team's seven-game losing streak.
And then the people rejoiced. Well, maybe half of them.
If you've ever been to a Red Sox game at Safeco Field, you know how strong of a fan presence they bring into a road game. While their chants and boastful statements definitely get on our nerves, this Seattlest can't blame most of them. Sure, you've got your bandwagon fans that have jumped on in the past few years with their success, but for the most part these are fans that grew up with the Red Sox and have earned their right to be proud. Some fans are way overboard and come off as pompous pricks, but you'll have that with any large fan base.
We've heard many a Mariners fan complain that the Red Sox fans are too much at Safeco, but you know what? It's not Red Sox fans' fault that Mariners fans aren't vocal. It's not their fault the Mariners are pathetic and have won a measly 19 games this year. It's not their fault the average Mariners fan would rather sit than stand at key moments in a game, and yell at people who choose to stand and cheer in front of them. It's not their fault Mariners fans can't get a chant or any type of positive momentum going without it being the last out of the 9th inning. It worked out well for Mariners fans in the end last night, but Red Sox fans owned that stadium the majority of the game.
We get it, the Mariners suck right now. It's tough to support the product on the field. But we've seen the same attitude at the majority of the Mariners games we've ever been to and it's just sad. To see another fanbase come in and take over your ballpark like that is just plain embarrassing. Seattle fans seem to be too used to it. Let's hope one of these years the Mariners get a winning team out on the field and everyone wakes up from their slumber. It worked for the Seahawks.
Note: This represents the view of this Seattlest only...and likely not the rest of the staff.
Favorite fan moment from last night's game: Seeing a mid-20s-year-old Red Sox fan getting in the face of an 80-year-old Mariners fan and talking shit, and the old man not backing down. The old man proceeded to then mock the Red Sox fans' "Let's Go Manny" chant to the delight of all of the fans in the section. Take a note M's fans.
2nd favorite moment: The little girl in front of us that would start screaming a "Let's Go Mariners" chant every time the Red Sox fans started up their "Let's Go Red Sox" chant. Her mom actually told her to stop once and the little girl started crying, and then she did it again the next round of chants. That girl is going to be a hardcore Mariners fan when she grows up. They could use her now, though.

You can't say it's the "reserved passive-aggressive Scandinavian Northwestern" way of acting, because there are some leather-lunged bastards at both Huskies and Seahawks games.
Mariners fans are just pussies. No way that fan takeover happens in any other city with a set of balls.
Agreed.
I can remember back in 2001 (the 116-win season) when an M's pitcher had two strikes on a batter, I'd stand up and clap (like they do in every other MLB park) and the fans nearby would mutter "down in front".
I gave up my season tickets the following year. Its simply not a baseball town.
On Saturday, I'm moving to Seattle, after 4 years of living next to Fenway park.
In Seattle, I expect to be a hardcore baseball fan, whereas here, I'm only a casual follower.
The only way you can expect to have any conversation here with townies is through baseball talk. Otherwise they give you filthy looks and don't hold doors for you.
Welcome to Seattle, middleman.
We're polite, but not friendly.
"Just plain embarrassing", M's fans being used to having a doormat attitude in their own stadium, M's sucking right now; all good points. The water cooler talk around here, and I somewhat agree with it, is that Red Sox games at Safeco are to be avoided because Sox fans are jerks. There's another element to this whole discussion that should be emphasized though--how many of those jerks/fans are actually from Boston? Let's face it, and you alluded to this, Geoff, we are a region of bandwagon-jumpers.
We still don't get the true essence of sports-fandom: loving your team through thick and thin, being vocal about it, and allowing your heart to be broken every time your team lets you down. As a native Washingtonian and lifelong M's fan, I didn't really understand that until I lived in Philly.
I'll bet you got your eyes opened to true fandom by the Philly fans.
After all, these are the fans that booed Santa Claus.
Not only did they boo him, they threw snowballs at him! Yes, some all-class fans for Seattlites to emulate. ;-)
Thanks, Ruffhauser.
I'm from the Philly area originally, so I know a thing or two about underdogs. Proud to be a Ms/Phils fan.
