There Was a Shooting at Folklife?!?

The ever-dangerous folk music festival scene strikes again! While we were enjoying Sasquatch and the teeming crowds of drunks it brings, there was apparently a shooting at the peace-and-love-in that is the Folklife Festival. The most intense thing at the Folklife that we knew and loved were over-enthusiastic marimba players and drum circles. Apparently, times have changed. Three people were injured on Saturday when a fight broke out near a drum circle. According to witnesses, one of the men engaged in the fight tried to pistol whip another brawler, and the gun went off. The Folklife version of the magic bullet traveled through a man's nasal passage, another man's hand, and finally ended up stuck in a woman's leg.

Four fellow Folklife attendees "saw the suspected gunman running through the crowd, jumped him and held him until police arrived at what was by then a chaotic scene of screaming, fleeing people," according to the P-I's report of the incident. When police arrived at the scene, they arrested 22-year-old Clinton Chad Grainger from Snohomish County for the shooting. When Grainger was led off the Seattle Center campus in handcuffs, the Folklife crowd taunted him; some went as far as throwing trash at the suspected shooter. Grainger is currently being held on $350,000 bail in King County, awaiting charges for the shooting.

All drum circle jokes aside (and we have hundreds of them....), this story makes Seattlest really sad. Folklife is a Seattle tradition enjoyed by families, free-roaming teenagers, hard-core folkies, and everyone else in between. It is not Altamont. We sincerely hope this was just a terrible random incident and not an indication of what is to come for future Folklife festivals.

Retarded: Occurring or developing later than desired or expected; delayed.

    synonyms: backward, disabled, handicapped

I'm not exactly sure how that is "derogatory." It just is what it is.

Given Katelyn is able to operate a computer and interact here, I would expect her logical skills to have progressed a bit farther than the kindergarten level she displayed with her theory.

Then again, given you can actually form complete sentences, I'd assume you would be able to figure out which post I was calling stupid. Apparently that is giving you far too much credit.

I you want to act self-righteous about how politically correct you are it works better if you aren't a complete moron.

  • Abbey

    a good question indeed!

He and Nightman should head back to Texas, with the not beautiful scenery and where it is apparently still okay to use the term retarded in a derogatory manner.

  • jwhieger

Why didn't Thorrific stay in Texas if he hates it here so much?

    Why does Thorrific punish himself?

  • Abbey

My post was a news post about the shooting. The hip-hop vs. folk show violence discussion was in the comments.

Get your facts straight before insulting me, please.

  • Nightman

Your logical thinking ability is severely retarded.

    Folk Music Festival Experiences Violence

    therefore

Rap Music Does Not Attract Violence

I wonder if we added up the number of violent incidents that have occurred at folk music events and then add up the total number of violent incidents at nightclubs playing rap music which one would be higher. How bout the number of violent incidents that have occurred at nightclubs playing rap music versus nightclubs playing anything else. How bout the number of violent incidents that occurred on a clubs hip-hop night as compared to any of the clubs other nights. Gee I wonder... Remember Mr. Lucky's? Perfect example, and definitely not an anomaly.

And hey, I like rap. I go to all the clubs too (and watched a drive-by happen once, and countless fights). Mainstream rap draws ghetto people who want to sneak in guns. There's truth to every stereotype. Go to a club on their hip-hop night - your almost guaranteed to see a fight break out. Now, as far as say underground hip-hop shows at Numo's, yeah I'd say that is a different kind of rap music and a different kind of crowd.

Exactly how does anything that occurs at a Folklife festival change that reality?

In conclusion, your post was stupid.

  • Thorrific

Seattle has the biggest concentration of disgusting white-trash choads I have ever seen, and until last August I had lived in TEXAS my whole life. What a nasty place this is, full of dumpy meth-garbage, crackheads, and the wimpy liberals who coddle them. The beautiful scenery here is ruined by the horrible retarded "people".

  • Katelyn

I'm happy for more evidence, but of course I'd rather it never happened. Kids around, etc... Doesn't make it worse than a shooting at a club, but it highlights both the horror of violence and the absurdity of the argument that certain types of music inherently beget violent acts. Huge thumbs down and I hope articles like this and Dominic's satirical piece on Slog from yesterday will give people pause next time they make the argument that hiphop is a menace to the city's nightlife.

  • Kim Ruehl

i was not there for the shooting, but what insanity! katelyn should be happy that this is proof not all music-related violence is inspired by rap shows. damn hippies.
