There Was a Shooting at Folklife?!?

This is the Folklife we remember fondly. Photo by Seattlest Flickr contributor pdgibson
The ever-dangerous folk music festival scene strikes again! While we were enjoying Sasquatch and the teeming crowds of drunks it brings, there was apparently a shooting at the peace-and-love-in that is the Folklife Festival. The most intense thing at the Folklife that we knew and loved were over-enthusiastic marimba players and drum circles. Apparently, times have changed. Three people were injured on Saturday when a fight broke out near a drum circle. According to witnesses, one of the men engaged in the fight tried to pistol whip another brawler, and the gun went off. The Folklife version of the magic bullet traveled through a man's nasal passage, another man's hand, and finally ended up stuck in a woman's leg.
Four fellow Folklife attendees "saw the suspected gunman running through the crowd, jumped him and held him until police arrived at what was by then a chaotic scene of screaming, fleeing people," according to the P-I's report of the incident. When police arrived at the scene, they arrested 22-year-old Clinton Chad Grainger from Snohomish County for the shooting. When Grainger was led off the Seattle Center campus in handcuffs, the Folklife crowd taunted him; some went as far as throwing trash at the suspected shooter. Grainger is currently being held on $350,000 bail in King County, awaiting charges for the shooting.
All drum circle jokes aside (and we have hundreds of them....), this story makes Seattlest really sad. Folklife is a Seattle tradition enjoyed by families, free-roaming teenagers, hard-core folkies, and everyone else in between. It is not Altamont. We sincerely hope this was just a terrible random incident and not an indication of what is to come for future Folklife festivals.
