Life of Bruce Lee to Become Broadway Musical

If this announcement had come on April Fool's Day, we'd have thought they went a little overboard with the prank. A Broadway musical about the life of Bruce Lee and his journey to martial arts and movie stardom? Apparently so. Today, Elephant Eye Theatrical announced their latest musical Bruce Lee: Journey to the West, which is scheduled to debut sometime during the 2010-11 season.

According to the press announcement, we should be incredibly impressed by the people who've signed on to the project (not least, the Intiman's Bart Sher). The musical will feature martial arts, Chinese opera, and a few big Broadway pop numbers.

We're curious to see how the Seattle that Bruce Lee knew will be portrayed on stage. It was long rumored at Seattlest's alma mater, Garfield High School, that Lee had once roamed the claustrophobic halls as a student (though he didn't receive his diploma from GHS). Before taking the world by storm with his martial arts moves, Bruce Lee attended the University of Washington and wore the purple and gold proudly.

As strange as this all seems, we've scoured the press releases and there's no "just kidding" hidden in the announcement. And April Fool's has long come and gone--so we guess we will be seeing you on the Great White Way sometime in 2010 for Bruce Lee: The Musical.
