Holy Jeezits, what an outstanding weekend!
On Friday, we knocked off early, rounded up the wife and in-laws, bought a bag of tacos, and headed to Richmond Beach in Shoreline. The picnic tables were warm, the tacos messy and delicious. We watched people play or take naps. We watched a pale, red-headed girl turn lobster red while playing Frisbee with her negligent mother.
Saturday, we drove out to Snoqualmie Falls. We'd never been there, so we had no idea how popular it was. Just knew it was over there somewhere. Hey, let's go to the falls, we said--apparently in chorus with thousands of others. It took about fifteen minutes of circling the parking lots to find a spot. A couple more minutes and we probably would have given up, drove off in search of something else to look at.
The falls were raging mad. Compare our photo at right with this photo. We had no idea there could be such a massive difference in the falls in spring versus summer conditions (granted, that August Wikipedia shot was taken in 2004--it would be interesting to check the falls out this August).
Desperately needing something to cool us off, we journeyed next to Issaquah's XXX Root Beer for burgers and root beer floats. The burgers were dripping with yum, and the root beer (oh the root beer!) was just the cold, sweet treat we needed.
After a period of lazy recovery we capped our Saturday off with a delectable home-cooked meal of fresh Copper River Salmon, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and a tall gin & tonic.
Sunday started early (too early if you ask us), with the 26th Annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge event. We opted for the four-mile family walk, which was basically a gorgeous, sunny, meandering stroll through the UW campus. One of those strolls that make you feel happy all over.
From there, we walked up to "the ave" for a surprising breakfast at Shultzy's Sausage ("Seattle's Wurst Restaurant"--ha ha ha). We say "surprising" only because the only information we'd been given was that we were headed to a sausage place. We didn't care, we just wanted food--any food--at that point. When we got there, however, and saw the breakfast menu, our tired feet wanted to do the happy dance. We enjoyed an awesome chorizo omelet with home fries, toast, and a cup of tasty Caffe Vita coffee.
And then, we napped. We napped like we haven't napped in years. One of those full-belly, too-much-sun naps that are hard to recover from. But we had to persevere. It was our dog Annabelle's turn for some fun in the sun. Off to Sand Point-Magnuson Park!
If you've never been to the Magnuson off-leash area, it's worth it (even if you don't have a dog) for the giggle-fix alone. There are dogs everywhere and rarely do you have any clue which dog belongs to which human. When you enter this park, you're in their world now. You're a guest, an observer--especially once you get to the beach where the dogs are too busy having the time of their life to bother with what us humans are up to. There are dogs of all shapes, sizes, and levels of playfulness here, so watch out. If you're not paying attention, you could easily be mowed over by a big lab charging out to the water for a tennis ball.
Our dog, Annabelle, she just likes to get her belly wet. She trots into the lake, lowers herself gingerly to about chest-high, points her nose to the sky, squints her eyes, and smiles. If you think dogs don't smile, you couldn't be more wrong. Dogs smile.

"bought a bag of tacos"
I love that "bag" is the appropriate term for a collective of Tacos.
Sounds like a fun weekend.
*sigh* I love weekends!!
Park at the lower parking lot and do the "hike" to the bottom of the falls. Slightly less touristy and you might actually see some salmon.
