Can't Miss It: Monday

TO TELL THE TRUTH: We in the Seattlest newsroom love a good controversy. When it involves a literary sensation and Oprah, the intrigue is doubly delicious. So you can bet that number one on our list of things to do tonight is go to Town Hall to see James Frey and Josh Kilmer-Purcell for a night of readings from two "memorists turned novelists." Frey admitted on Oprah that what he wrote about getting over his drug addiction was a lot of lies. Maybe his novel will turn out to be true?

SOUNDS SMARTER THAN US: We think we understand the description of the other talk being given at Town Hall tonight by author Stuart Kauffman who wrote Reinventing the Sacred: A New View of Science, Reason and Religion, but we're not positive, which is why we're thinking about skipping the trash above and going to this instead. Kauffman posits that life can organize itself and is not reliant on evolution to change and grow. Taking it all a step further, he thinks this point of view can be extrapolated to all sorts of things such as economics and may even bring us closer to God.

LOVE THE WEATHER: So yeah, it's Monday and we're all hungover from the sun this weekend. But you know as well as we do that in May, it's best to take advantage of it while we have it. Tomorrow the rain is back and the temps are falling. So if a reading or a movie isn't your thing, take a stroll in the park (may we suggest Discovery?), grab a drink or a meal at an outdoor cafe, or just sit on the porch and watch life go by. You won't regret it.

INTRIGUE, THE OLD FASHIONED WAY: Remember the days when we knew exactly who our enemies were? That was when we all hated the Commies and were terrified that they were in our midst. Capitalizing on this abject fear was the only natural reaction (besides a few witch hunts), and thus was created one of the creepiest, and best, movies of all time: The Manchurian Candidate. It's playing tonight at SIFF Cinema and is a must-see. Look for the creepy kiss between mother and son, which still gives us the willies just thinking about it.

7:30 p.m. // SIFF Cinema, 321 Mercer St. // $7 (members), $10 (non-members) tickets at the door or online.
