The University of Washington Looking for a New Anthem

Does this mean no more "Bow Down to Washington" at Husky games? Say it ain't so!

The University of Washington is hosting a songwriting contest to create the new theme song for the university. If your ode to the purple and gold is chosen, you'll be awarded $1,000 and a lifetime membership in the University of Washington Alumni Association.

Are you a devoted Husky fan who happens to be great at writing jingles? Then this is the contest for you! Seattlest would love to hear some of your submissions or read some goofy Husky haikus. Or weigh in with your opinion, does the UW need a new song?

According to the University of Washington's Official Athletic Site that Seattlest Reader Frank sent me to, these are the lyrics to the current University of Washington Anthem:

Alma Mater

To her we sing who keeps the ward

O'er all her sons from sea to sea

Our alma mater Washington

A health, a health we give to thee

Child of the mighty western land

You're the mother of a mighty race

Silent her gentle vigil holds

In strength, purity and grace

Yes Frank, I imagine that is true! Thanks for the link.

I am not a Husky by graduation, but since my wonderful hippie University-UC Santa Cruz-banned "war games" like football in the founding documents of the University, I have always gotten my college sports fix from the UW. Thus, I'm only familiar with Bow Down to Washington, not the archaic "Alma Mater" anthem you linked me to.

Wow. That does need to be changed.
