Molly Moon's Won Over Our Ice-Cream-Loving Hearts

Molly Moon's

Ever since Cow's Meow closed, Seattle's been rich in gelato but poor in high-quality ice cream. (Sorry, Scoops, you're not really a substitute.)

That's just changed. Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream opened in Wallingford this weekend, and while Seattlest missed the grand opening party on Saturday, we twisted a few arms in the family and stopped by on Sunday afternoon. The good part about going with two other people: we got to try 5 of their 16 flavors.

Our brief tasting notes:

Salted caramel: Controversial. On the one hand, we thought this was a little too salty. On the other hand, we thought it tasted amazing and wasted no time wolfing down our scoop. In hindsight, we think it's the right amount of salt but distributed too smoothly. We'd love this outstanding ice cream even more if sea salt crystals were folded in rather than mixed into the caramel. Mrs. Seattlest and Little Miss Seattlest both liked it so maybe we should just accept that it was awesome.

Cardamom: A flavor we loved at Cow's Meow and were delighted to find at Molly Moon's. Intense cardamom flavor, not too sweet. Very good.

"Scout" mint: The only thing that disappointed Little Miss Seattlest is that this wasn't green, as green is her favorite color. But the chocolate cookies remain delightfully crisp, and it's tasty, refreshing mint. LMS ate her scoop with delight.

Thai iced tea: This tastes exactly like a refreshing, not-too-sweet Thai iced tea. It's even the right orangey-brown color. Truth in flavor naming.

Balsamic strawberry: Perhaps our favorite flavor of the day. We swiped two spoonfuls from Mrs. Seattlest and would've traded our (perfectly lovely) cardamom for the rest. The balsamic lurks among the strawberry in tart brown pockets. Delicious, refreshing, and what we'll be ordering on our next trip. Pity Molly Moon's is a good half hour from Rainier Beach.

Which is fine since Scoops closed...

Good thing I have a reason or five to head out to Wallingford this weekend.

I go to Garfield at Lincoln, so this being about a minute from school, I headed down there at lunch. I look forward to trying the flavors, especially salted caramel, but the paint fumes were so strong today I had to leave before I could order.

Aarg.

I didn't notice the paint fumes yesterday, but it's definitely a brand-spanking-new interior.

Scoops closed? Shows how often I get up on Queen Anne these days. They were no Mix.

And I meant to mention this: I think Molly Moon's hours are 11-8 every day, but their website doesn't have any info. I heard an employee telling someone in the store when they were open, but I can't definitively recall the actual times they gave.

$5.49-- that's what it costs for two teensy scoops (cardmom and coffee, FYI) at Molly Moon's Saturday. And there was a line down the block. It was like we were at Pinkberry in LA. It was good, but it wasn't THAT good.

For $4.99 and your Safeway club card, you can get a half gallon of birthday cake-flavored ice cream with swirl of blue frosting. Not local, nor organic. Just rad.

I just went. $3.29 for a scoop of balsamic strawberry, and it was delicious! No line. And I didn't find out the official hours, since I forgot in all the ordering excitement. At any rate, Molly Moon's IS open on Mondays at 5:45pm.

Cough cough.

I just noticed Scoops closed too. But you're right, it was no Cat's Meow.

I waited in that crazy line on Saturday. I had the salty caramel and the cardamon. I agree with your take on both. Before I tasted it, I thought the salty caramel wouldn't be salty enough. It was too salty, but in a good way. Yummy! I can't wait to go back.

Seriously, the $3 scoop was SO small. I had the "scout" mint which was pretty good, but the portion was so sad.

He got a strawberry "milkshake" for $5. By MILKshake apparently they mean only milk because there was no strawberry taste and the consistency was liquid. You know how shakes should be thick and collaspe a straw?? There was none of that and no flavor.

We ended up walking down to Dick's and buying a strawberry shake for $1.90. It was delicious :)
