For those of you that like a little funk in your beer, the Brouwer's Cafe Sour Beer Festival kicks off tomorrow. Now, sour beer definitely is not for everyone. Okay, sour beer isn't for most people. Even the hardest of beer geeks likely said, "What the hell was THAT?" after having their first taste of a sour treat. One Seattlest recently described the Russian River Deviation (Bottleworks Anniversary beer) as tasting of human sweat, and another's girlfriend mentioned how it reminded her of sucking on a foot (let's not go there). But for those that "get it," sour beer is a fantastic treat, and a lineup like this rarely comes along in one place. If you don't like it, fine, more for the rest of us. Brouwer's will be busy enough as it is.
For beginners, Duchesse de Bourgogne is a moderately sour brown ale that is widely available in Seattle.
The festival will start Friday May 9th and will continue until the beers run dry. We will have between 25 and 30 different sour beers on draft and we will also release a bunch of vintage Cantillon Bottles that we have been cellaring. Some of the highlights on draft will be multiple Cantillons, Russian River/Bottleworks 9 Deviation, New Belgium Eric’s ale, N.B. La Terroir, N.B. La Terroir Foeder #3, two versions of Boons Marriage Parfait aged in different barrels, Ommegang Ommegedon, Walkingman Bloot Voeste Bruin which is a brown soured with the kambucha mushroom, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and a handful of old favorites and surprises.
