If you're not a Pearl Jam fan, you don't suffer from Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, and you aren't familiar with England's hard-rockin' UFO, chances are you don't know about PJ guitarist Mike McCready's tribute band, Flight to Mars.
You should.
Not because McCready is one of the planet's greatest guitar players. (Ever.) And not because Flight to Mars' covers—"Rock Bottom," "Too Hot to Handle," "Lights Out," etc.—rock harder and sound better than UFO's vintage originals.
You should know about Flight to Mars because the band's annual Showbox-shaking performances benefit the Northwest Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, a non-profit that's strived to cure the inflammatory bowel diseases since 1967.
Not familiar with these extremely painful and sometimes debilitating conditions? Consider yourself lucky.
McCready made public his 20-year fight with Crohn's in 2002, and has been a staunch supporter of the CCFA ever since, making each Flight to Mars show bigger than the last—while keeping ticket prices below $20.
This year's May 3 event doesn't buck that tradition. From the press release:
Local indie-rockers Feral Children and singer-songwriter Kristen Ward join Flight to Mars for an evening of music in support of CCFA’s continued work....In addition, McCready will perform a very special Tribute to Jimi Hendrix during the opening set and will be joined by brothers Rick and Chris Friel -- cofounders of McCready’s original band Shadow.
Another Flight to Mars event constant is the chance to get VIP treatment prior to the show. As in previous years, The Wishlist Foundation, a PJ-fan-run, non-profit charitable organization, put a handful of special ticket packages on eBay—and collected about seven grand for the CCFA. (Sorry we didn't mention this sooner; if more auctions appear—which could get you in early, get you some grub, a nice view of soundcheck, and possibly a meet-n-greet with Mike, Tim, Gary, Paul, Kelly, and Ty, we'll let you know.)
Tickets also still appear to be available via Ticketmaster ($18 plus fees). If any remain on May 3, they'll be $22 at the door.
