YarnDyedPlaid,

I am far from a "too cool for school scenester". I love the guiltiest of the guilty (have seen every episode of the first season of "Paradise Hotel". Brag alert), or whatever level of appreciation you want to call "American Idol". However, I don't check into Seattlest for updates on these camp tv shows, just as I don't check into TV without Pity or TV Squad for reviews on Seattle restaurants or upcoming concerts. There is a difference.

As someone who certainly understands guilty pleasures, I'm going to have to side with JR on this one.

"Seattlest is a website about Seattle and everything that happens in it. That means news and events, restaurants and bars, happenings and goings-on."

PLEASE go back to writing about Seattle. I miss it.

From a fan...

The group numbers are forced and terrible. The Ford "commercials" are uncomfortable to sit through. Ryan Seacrest is a douche. Paula is perpetually drunk. Overall - the show has very few redeeming qualities - for the most part bubble gum corporate sponsor crap. However... all of the TERRIBLE parts of the show are part of what make it great. All of you too cool for school scenesters, by definition, must know irony. This shouldn't be a foreign concept to you.

But aside from all that, its great to be able to push all of that aside and witness true vocal talent. Regardless of the type of music you choose to listen to, anyone who appreciates music as an artform can appreciate a great vocalist. Kelly Clarkson, no matter how terrible you think her music is, is a GREAT singer. Carrie Underwood - no matter how much you despise country - is ridiculously talented. And Carly Smithson... she can SING. Holy crap, she can wail. Most of the people on there (like that dude who looks like the predator only prettier) - are lame and one dimensional. But its the every now and then when you get to witness a great voice - I think that's why I watch it every week. And why Seattlest chooses to write about it. But I could just be full of shit.

I'm sorry. I just don't get it. I was flipping round the dial last night and saw the opening horror show that was the six of whoever they are singing next to that horrible little toad who stole just about every note of music he ever "wrote," and shuddered. I try not to be completely elitist, though my postings in various places seem to be taken that way, but Idol's style of music, or pop, or whatever, just has absolutely no appeal to me. Perhaps some of the folks who get voted off early might be more interesting -- who was the rocker girl who was on this season? -- but I can't bring myself to watch it to find out as I'd have to sit through all the other dreck. I'd love to hear an explanation from a fan, though it won't change my mind.
