Cafe Stellina's Business Hours Are the Bane of Our Existence

Stellina.jpg

Damn you, Cafe Stellina. In the year and a half the restaurant's been open in its new space (the Piston & Ring Building, the same as La Spiga, on 12th Ave just before Union), their business hours have thwarted our attempts to eat there on at least five occasions.

For a while, they were open for brunch on Saturday but not Sunday, so the few times we stopped by on Sunday, the doors were closed. They're also only open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday, and of course we headed there on a Monday or Tuesday evening once or twice.

What makes matters worse is that 1) Stellina seemingly doesn't have a website, and 2) those websites we can normally count on for business hours information are mostly out-of-date. Stellina's current hours are as pictured, but most sites (NWsource, Seattle Times, The Weekly) have the hours wrong (and wrong in different ways; the Weekly's got them open at 6:30am on weekdays). Even those sites that do have the correct hours (The Stranger, Capitol Hill Triangle, Citysearch) still mention it as a breakfast/brunch spot, when that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

So this past Saturday, when we were trying to decide where to brunch, we figured we'd give Stellina another try. We knew they weren't always open on the weekends, but Yelp assured us they'd be serving Saturday morning. Now, we know Yelp, we like Yelp, we've had dinner with Yelp and they made for excellent company. But Yelp was wrong. We walked in the rain to Stellina to find the lights out and the chairs stacked on the tables.

For the record, our brunch (at the nearly-always-open Cafe Presse) was just dandy—no thanks to you, Stellina.

I always hate calling restaurants... If the website's down or whatever, I'd rather just go in person to find out they're closed. I think this stems from my irritation at having to answer the phone when I worked in food.

They may not have a website, but I believe they have a telephone...

  • I hate when restaurants do that. I guess I could just call, but still. That's what happens when you expect 24/7 operation in a not so 24/7 city. In time... in time...

Hey hey I said it was a breakfast place at its old location. I got burned the same way last year - showed up for brunch on a rainy saturday and also had friends meet us there only to find Stellina closed. They really are a mom & pop operation.
