Has immigration become the most divisive issue in America? If the battle brewing at the University of Washington over planned protests on the issue is any indication, we're leaning towards yes. An email from College Republicans is making the rounds at UW, announcing a planned game of "Find the Illegal Immigrant Tag" on the HUB lawn. The "game" is planned for Tuesday afternoon to call for the securing of American borders and a crack-down on illegal immigration.
This is not the first tactless protest the UW College Republicans have staged; in 2003 the group hosted an "Affirmative Action Bake Sale". To prove that "affirmative action is inherently racist," the price of cookies were based on the race of the purchaser. During the bake sale, College Republicans charged white students $1 for a cookie, while minorities paid between 25 to 95 cents based on their ethnicity and gender. The sale also offered doughnuts for 50 cents for everyone but Asian American and white students, who were not allowed to purchase doughnuts.
The UW College Republicans aren't alone in hosting these controversial "conversation starters." Similar events have been hosted by College Republicans at universities throughout the country, from UCLA to NYU. A counter-protest is scheduled for Tuesday at the University of Washington, organizers are describing their action as a "pro-immigration celebration."

Watch for Seattle Cacaphonists at this event. There may be more "illegal immigrants" than the organizers expect, including a few pilgrims.
It's an attempt by the College Republicans to get some attention to their tiny, unpopular and mean organization. Nothing more.

The part I find hilarious is that our women's center, in college, staged a wage gap bake sale - cookies were $1 for men, $0.75 for women. Except the point was the exact opposite of what these guys are trying to say...
If the intent was to confuse legal immigration with illegal immigration, then congratulations.

Neither political parties can be trusted when it comes to the illegal immigration occupation of our country. More states are trying to enact strict laws for enforcement against predator employers. However, THE SAVE ACT has the teeth and packs the punch, to halt this pestilence overwhelming our wilting economy. Very few Senators and Representatives have THE PEOPLE' S best interest in mind. The Democratic hierarchy have specifically been pandering to special interest groups, and very few have offered to co-author THE FEDERAL SAVE ACT.
A Mr. Rubenstein, a former director of research at the Hudson Institute, a nonpartisan policy research organization, said U.S. taxpayers paid more than $9,000 for each immigrant in the country, a third of whom are believed to be in the U.S. illegally.
In addition, more than 37 million immigrants in the United States, both legal and illegal, cost the federal government more than $346 billion last year, twice as much as the nation's fiscal deficit, according to a report released yesterday. The loss estimates, the report said, included $100 billion in federal taxes lost "from the reduction of native incomes caused by immigrant workers." He also stated that even programs that are not usually associated with immigration, he said, have actually added financial burdens to the taxpayers.
More than 10 million immigrants have arrived since year 2000; it is estimated that nearly 6 million are illegal. All told, the group of immigrants now account for 38 million at the moment according to the White House's own census bureau.
America cannot afford to enact another AMNESTY? The ramifications are unthinkable on each states economy? Taxpayers will have to support even more illegal immigrants as the word gets out and millions more will pour into our nation. Abbey really needs to get out in the streets more.
However, I do agree that "Find the Illegal Immigrant Tag" is not needed here in Seattle. You could hold it any day at the lunch wagon now permanently anchored next to the Home Depot out on Aurora. Pretty good salsa, too.
Word is this is cancelled now and the College Republicans are crying censorship.

While you're at it, you might want to perform a cursory grammar check. Citations for your "facts" would be nice too, but I'm guessing that's asking you to exceed your capacity.
@ Vanderleun - there are plenty of thoughtful protest methods, that are altogether different than the protest UWCR planned, which are still used effectively today. The lets-do-something-that-insult-everyone-but-the-nuts-protests seem to be a fairly new phenomenon championed not only by UW College Republicans, but by folks like Rev. Fred Phelps and various other hate-mongers.
If disagreeing with that tactic means i need to "get out in the street more," where I assume you are wi-fing all your charming comments to Seattlest from, so be it.
