Can't Miss It: Monday
BOOKS: Marjane Satrapi--she grew up in Iran so you don't have to--is speaking at the Moore tonight. Best known for her graphic memoir Persepolis (Now a major motion picture!), Satrapi is also the author and illustrator of Embroideries and Chicken with Plums, along with several children's books.
SCIENCE: Buddhist-friendly pediatric psychiatrist Daniel Siegel, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Center, has written a book called The Mindful Brain because books with brain in the title are hot right now. He says cultivating mindfulness (being aware, taking yourself off reactive autopilot) is primarily a function of the medial prefrontal cortex. He'll be talking about how parents can use this knowledge to strengthen bonds with their children.
7:30 p.m. // Town Hall, 8th & Seneca // Tickets: $25 at the door
FILM: We've seen The Saltmen of Tibet and we can promise you it's not a "rollercoaster thrill-ride" or a "three-hankie tearjerker." Director Ulrike Koch follows the annual three-month pilgrimage to the holy salt lakes of northern Tibet. That's pretty much it. A good deal of walking. Some salt scraping. More walking. (It reminds us of Mel Brooks' "2,000 Year Old Man" routine, where he talks about how watching clouds was a good job, back in the day.) Anyway, it really takes you back.
