Will Paul Allen Help Kill the Sonics?

Fuck%20David%20Stern.jpgA week from today the NBA teamowners will meet in New York to, among other things, discuss and possibly vote on moving the Sonics from Lower Queen Anne to Oklahoma City.

It will be interesting to see how Portland Trail Blazer owner Paul Allen votes.

He is a Seattle native, who lives, works, and develops here. He also owns the Seahawks, many of whose fans would be devastated if the Sonics were to move.

On the other hand, if the Sonics do leave, it means that he would own the only NBA franchise in the region, an up-and-coming Blazer team, that could capitalize on its Sonics and Seattle ties to become the team of the Northwest, garnering all the new cash that would come with it.

There is a feeling that the owners, except you-know-who, will vote for relocation, just in case they ever feel the need to move their team if their city won't build them a new arena.

Other developments:

Email shows that owner Clay Bennett and his business associates planned to move the Sonics all along (the hell you say).

Allen's former co-worker Steve Balmer has just pulled out of a plan that would have bought the team, and helped to spruce up Key Arena.

The Seattle Times is running a five-part series on the move and its effect on fans.

Seth at Enjoy the Enjoyment has a (far-fetched) plan in which Howard Schultz could actually become a hero, and keep the green and gold here. He will be on KJR 950AM at around 5:20 to discuss the situation.

I just wonder how pissed off PDX is going to be when we get their much better team.

Honestly though, nothing has set right with me and the Sonics. Maybe it's the green and yellow which hasn't worked in this town in 40+ years. We're all blue here. All the way.

"...many of whose fans would be devastated if the Sonics were to move."

devastated? really? i can understand being bummed or even a little sad but DEVASTATED, over a sports team that, in the grand scheme of our social fabric, has little social significance?

Another point, the Sonics moving also brings Sounders F.C. to the forefront that much more, he votes to move.

well, then count you among the people that wouldn't be devastated, z33bleoop. great. thanks for sharing. NEXT!

Yeah WA state isn't even green anymore so the green yellow motif is way off. Blues is all we got now. So yeah count me amongst the devastated I guess.

dev·as·tate
–verb (used with object)
1. to lay waste; render desolate.
2. to overwhelm.

you are overwhelmed by the fact that seattle won't have a basketball team? really? sounds like some people need to go back on their paxil. how's that for sharing?

and yes, you can count me as one that WON'T be devastated - i'll be cheering. i may even throw them a ticker tape parade as they leave. the public has one less group of spoiled jocks and their owners to cater to with our tax dollars. let's think of a better way of spending that money, like on helping the homeless whom the moniker "devastated" truly would fit.

Damn, someone brought out the literal dictionary. Sheeet.
