Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition
POETRY: This is a bit of a hike, but former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins is down in Tacoma at the Pantages Theatre. Collins is admired and reviled because people "get" his poetry, which is written largely in the key of sardonic. He sees his poetry as “a form of travel writing” and considers humor “a door into the serious.”
Friday 7:30 p.m. // Pantages Theatre, 901 Broadway, Tacoma // Tickets: $24-$46
FILM: This weekend Central Cinema is showing the director's cut of Donnie Darko. Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a schizophrenic high schooler off his meds and under the sometime influence of a large rabbit named Frank; he's trying to solve a time travel mystery while battling his school's adoration of a self-help guru. In many ways, the typical high school experience. Throw in Central Cinema's pizza and beer, and your weekend night is golden.
Friday-Sunday 7, 10 p.m. // Central Cinema, 1411 21st Avenue // Tickets: $5
DANCE: Spectrum Dance Theatre goes bubblegum this weekend--well, as bubblegum as SDT gets, with "Fun, Rock, and Pop" at the Moore. Donald Byrd has set pieces to music by M.I.A., TV on the Radio, DJ Cheb I Sabbah, and MIDIval PunditZ, and Philly-based guest choreographer Roni Koresh collaborated with Karl Mullen. Plus, there'll be special guest appearances by Olivier Wevers from the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Julianne Kepley from San Francisco Ballet.
SEX WORKSHOP: Sunday night, the sex-positive people over at Babeland present G-spot 101 ("what it is, where to find it, how to stimulate it and what could happen when you do") along with everything you always wanted to know about female ejaculation. Singles and couples welcome. (Nothing about threesomes, but we imagine it's alright.)
Sunday 7:30-9:30 p.m. // Babeland, 707 East Pike Street // Tickets: $30 (206-328-2914)
