Why Didn't Someone Tell Us Mix Ice Cream Disappeared?
First things first: Things are seriously awry in this town when a Taco-frickin'-Bell inspires multiple blog requiems when it closes, but Seattle's own Mix Ice Cream slips away into the night with nary a peep.
That's right. We're going to have to go to Fremont or (shudder) Southcenter when we crave hand-mixed ice cream. They've got Cold Stones. But the Ave is now Mixless.
We discovered the above-pictured sign Friday afternoon, when we stopped by for some ice cream before visiting the Henry. We settled for Häagen-Dazs and resolved to get to the bottom of Mix's disappearance.
But there wasn't much to discover. The sign--from an employee? a manager? a last customer?--says the store closed in '07, but Menuism and Yelp both include reviews from early this year. Yelpers say the Greenlake location is closed, too.
And that's it. Nothing in the Times, the P-I, Google News, Technorati. Granted, we hadn't been for, well, a couple of years -- but we had a kid and moved to Rainier Beach, so our ice cream forays have been fewer, farther between, and more limited in scope. But we used to take out-of-town guests to Mix -- even when it was Marbletop -- and seduce them with a Jet City Buzz. We expect pieces of Seattle to vanish, but dammit, we also expect some commemoration when they were as yummy as Mix was.
Now? Now we regret that we never brought in the mini-pretzels one Mix employee said she'd mix into a scoop for us. Maybe someone at Cold Stone would do that in lieu of singing a song for a tip.
