Point Counterpoint: Jon Brockman-- Good or Not Good?

As we wrote earlier, the Huskies play Cal-Berkeley tonight in the first round of the Pac Ten Tournament. They'll be doing it without an injured Jon Brockman, seen by many as the team's best player. However, is he any good?

Dusty (Yes): Brockman owned Kevin Love at Hec-Ed, and if you say “but Artem Wallace guarded him” then maybe HE should be conference player of the year. AR-TEM! AR-TEM! AR-TEM.…MVP! MVP! MVP!

I’m not saying Kevin Love is horrible. Hell, I’d even agree with the Player of the Year selection….I’m just saying is he THAT much better than Brockman? I just think, if they pick the best five, regardless of position, Brockman deserves first team.

Jason (No): Brockman is really just a role player on a young, somewhat under performing team. He's the classic Nick Collison guy who can put up good stats, but not really do anything to help your team win.

Dusty: So, the difference between being conference player of the year, and being 2nd team all Pac-10 is being slightly LESS productive? (Kevin Love: 17.4ppg, 10.9rpg. Jon Brockman: 17.6ppg, 11.5rpg) Yes, I understand Brockman’s team under-achieved….but still. Also, for all the talk about what an amazing (outlet) passer Kevin love is, he doesn’t even average 2 assists per game.

ALSO, for being 7’, I’d hope Brook Lopez would a) average more rebounds (THREE less than Brockman) and b) shoot better than 48% from the field (Brockman, 53%)

Seriously, Pac-10 coaches, you’re assholes.

Jason: Brockman got owned by Brook(e) Lopez. Also, "losing games because you get more touches that your talent dictates" doesn't show up on the stat sheet.

He is a defensive liability against teams that can pass the ball and post players who can actually move their feet. He was in the wrong place on D for the entire ASU game.

Seattlest Drew (The Decider): Brockman is a great forward, unfortunately he has to play the center role on a UW team that is made to play a fast-paced game. Going up against bigger/taller guys (Lopez/Love/WSU's Baynes etc.) and getting the production he does, I think that qualifies him as being "any good."

With his stats on a team that struggled through much of their conference season, I think he definitely deserves the first team consideration. However, I think Brockman is an offensive liability since the team is built to run-and-gun, instead of muscle points out of the paint.

Brockman is tough and that is important for a big man. Strength outrebounds height often enough.

On a side note, I thought Brockman was more valuable than Spencer Hawes last year.
