Weekend Music
Tonight, if you're not already going to the second sold-out Magnetic Fields show, there's still a few tickets left for John in the Morning at Night at Neumo's, with the Duke Spirit, the Voom Blooms, and Tulsa. There's also PWRFL Power's (aka Kaz Nomura) second CD release show at the Vera Project. Since Kaz won a slot at last year's Capitol Hill Block Party (via the Stranger's Block Star contest last spring), he also won a spot in an Esurance ad, resulting in "the most unusual Esurance commercial to date." Check it:
Or, if you can figure out when the Fremont Bridge is closed and when it's crossable, head to the High Dive for Ben's Brother and A Fine Frenzy, the latter of which does the chick-with-a-piano thing quite well.
Tomorrow night, you've got plenty to choose from: As previously mentioned, Mark Pickerel is playing at the Tractor, or head down the block to the Sunset for the tasty pop nuggets of local music elder statesman Gary Reynolds and his backing band, the Brides of Obscurity. The show's free with proof of purchase of his latest album, Santiago's Vest.
In other great backing-band-name news, there's Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down, opening for Xiu Xiu at Chop Suey. Thao's debut album is Pitchfork-approved (7.7), and her live performances really showcase her clever songwriting, mad guitar-plucking skillz, and charmingly winning personality. She sounds kinda like an upbeat Cat Power, just y'know, not crazy.
As to Sunday night, you've got one solid option: the dark and foxy, 50s-twinged Swedish love songs of the Raveonettes at Neumo's.
