Can't Miss It: Weekend Edition

FRIDAY MUSIC: We're supporting local talent this evening, with a Cornish Senior Recital. Composer Andrew Boscardin (aka Bosco) has two new pieces ready to meet the world. He tells us:

The first set will feature a sextet with myself, Mack Grout, Brad Gibson, Rachael Contorer and Clark Gibson. The second set will feature a 13-piece big band. All of the music was written by me and represents easily the largest and most daunting undertaking of my musical life to date. It should be a very special and exciting night and I doubt that the big band material will be played again anytime soon (if ever).
Do we love the big band music? Yes, we do. Do we love the free big band music even more? Yes, we do.

PerformanceMemoirs.jpgSATURDAY PERFORMANCE ART: Performance Memoirs at Hotel Max is the latest in Laura Curry's attempts to flip an audience out. Curry, Lori Dillon and Pamela Gregory chat, paint their nails, drink vodka, take photos, get dressed (or undressed), and run a bath. They draw an audience of 10 into the action through conversation, and invite them to explore the room by snooping into dresser drawers and suitcases, or lounging on the queen-sized bed. Brendan Kiley went last weekend, so you won't end up in the Stranger if you go now.

4:30, 7:30, and 9:30pm // Hotel Max, 620 Stewart St // Tickets: $18 in advance only

WM3%20POSTER3.JPGSATURDAY BENEFIT: The West Memphis Three is not a band, but bands want to help them out. Local indie trio Hardison is hosting this benefit. Shawn Hardison, a Jacksonville expatriate, says: "It means a lot to me personally as I believe this is a fucking travesty."

8pm // Beacon Pub, 3057 Beacon Ave S // Donations requested

SUNDAY FILM: Hitchcock's 1944 thriller Lifeboat is closing at Central Cinema. Last chance to see Tallulah Bankhead vs. the Nazis, and scarf down some pizza and beer while you're at it. The Rotten Tomato people give it a 95% Fresh! rating, and run down the plot for you:

After a German U-boat torpedoes their ship, several survivors find themselves together in a lifeboat.... The group is joined by the commander of the German U-boat (Walter Slezak), which was itself sunk in the exchange. Choosing to take him aboard as a gesture of humanity, and for the sake of his seafaring skills, proves to be a fateful decision.

7, 9:30pm // Central Cinema, 1411 21st Ave // Tickets: $5
