Seattlest Week in Beer: Barleywine, New Beers, and Closing Breweries

If you have not made it into Beveridge Place Pub in West Seattle for their Barleywine Bacchanal yet, it's not too late. Tonight, they will be tapping three different vintages of the Lagunitas Olde Gnarly Wine ('04, '06 & '07), which enables you to see exactly how this beer changes over time. At 9.7% alcohol, it shines after a few years. The contrast between the '04 and '07 should be very interesting. Stay away from the '04 Roza Reserve from Snipes Mountain if you head in there tonght; it was one of the most god-awful things we've ever tried.
Two exciting new beers are arriving in Seattle this week. The Oskar Blues Ten Fiddy Imperial Stout and the Full Sail Barrel Aged Imperial Porter should be hitting shelves at Bottleworks today, and they should also be available at better stores/bars around town when they get their deliveries this week. If you have never tried anything from Oskar Blues (CO), they are proof that good beer can come from a can. They are on top of a new mini-trend around the country to distribute craft beer in cans, rather than bottles. As for the Full Sail BA Porter, we previewed this beer a month ago, but distribution was delayed in King County because of a paperwork snafu.
For those in the NW that grew up drinking Dead Guy Ale, Uber Tavern currently has the new Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale on tap. It is a stronger take on their classic, best-selling beer that comes off as overly alcoholic and a bit messy in the one taste we had; we'll give it another chance, though. They plan to release this soon in Rogue's signature 750ml ceramic bottles that will probably cost $20. So, try it on tap while you still can.
Uber also has the Aecht Schlenkerla Helles on tap, which has become one of our favorite beers over the past year. The light, refreshing lager is brewed in the same system as the ultra-smokey Rauchbier from the same brewery. Even though it is brewed with no actual smoked malt, the Helles picks up a solid dose of smoke taste, without taking away from the refreshing aspect.

Two local WA breweries have closed recently. Pacific Rim Brewing in Seattle has shut its doors and filed for bankruptcy. Their Rat City IPA was one of the many staple IPAs poured around town and will be missed. We tried to contact the owners for more info, but we had no luck. Former Pacific Rim brewer Chris Miller is now working at Snipes Brewing in Yakima.
Heads Up Brewing Company in Silverdale, WA, was a mix of a "Brew on Premises," where you could go in and pay to brew your own beer, and a brewery/tap room that poured house beers and selections from all over. While it sounds like the place had a strong following, it was never profitable and the owner decided to call it quits for that business model. He plans to open up a new bottle shop and taproom in East Bremerton or Mannette sometime later this year. Both Beveridge Place Pub and the Collins have kegs of the Heads Up 9MM, a 12% "Imperial Amber," that might be pouring this week.

I'm headed to BPP one or two nights this week. I hope I haven't missed the North Coast Brewery Old Stock.
