Sonic Boom Closing

Sometimes this Seattlest is a bit behind the news, so an e-mail we just got from a friend who works in Fremont let us in on the fact that the Fremont Sonic Boom is closing and selling its CDs. 30% off new ones and 50% off used.

When we saw that, we wrote a post bemoaning the loss and making the required statements about missing the Fremont of yore. But Seattlest Audrey pointed us to a Line Out post from January that makes the decision look a lot less negative.

This is not due to downloading or file sharing nor is it due to declining business. The change is due to market forces such as increasing rent and major neighborhood changes. We’ve always thought it was a bit crazy to have two locations (Ballard & Fremont) so close together (2.3 miles, to be exact). The Ballard store will undergo renovations and reorganization and offer more to our customers than ever before. Most importantly, the staff will be offered better wages and more security, continued health insurance benefits and 401K plan as well as a partial stake in the company.

Although the news isn't quite as bad as we first thought, we're still going to wistfully remember the Fremont of yore because we're like that.

Sonic Boom Fremont's last day will be Monday. Happy shopping!

Does anybody know if vinyl is discounted too? I might just have to hop on a bus.

Funny. I had totally forgotten about that post even though at the time I remember loving it and saying so in the comments. That was before I was writing here and I made the first comment on it actually.
