Can't Miss It: Thursday

persuasion.jpgIs February Jane Austen month? PBS has turned every Sunday evening into a Jane celebration (see the KCTS Jane Austen blog for the definition of overkill), but if you want to experience Jane Austen the way she meant to be experienced (if you get our drift) and are too lazy to read a book, then Book-It's Persuasion is all you, baby.

Book-It is the place where they actually act out the whole book, which to our sense and sensibilities works better with some works than others. As we imagine hearing Austen read aloud, we approve. Also, the P-I gives it a thumbs up:

Book-It Repertory Theatre's adaptation of "Persuasion" is sneakily captivating. Part of the show's power lies in the drama-within-the-drama created by Chiara Motley as Anne. Motley starts out as a pallid mouse. Bit by bit she gains vivacity. Her posture improves. For Act 2, she has some color on her cheeks. Costume changes provide complements to flesh tones. Hesitant steps become determined strides.

Another seductive element is Austen's prose, adapted for Book-It by Jen Taylor and Colin Byrne. Without ever getting gooey, Austen is full of compassionate insight.

This sounds just right for Valentine's Day night.

7:30pm // Book-It Repertory, Seattle Center House // Tickets $25 adults, $22 senior, $15 student
