The University District was plagued with violent assaults this weekend. Within a 36-hour period four students were assaulted in what were thought to be related attacks, a man was seriously injured in a stabbing, and another University of Washington student was robbed at gun point.
All of the attacks occurred within blocks of the University of Washington campus. The four students injured in the related assault were attacked with bricks by an estimated 10 assailants. The attack occurred around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning in the 4700 block of 17th Ave. Later that day, a yet to be identified man suffered life-threatening stab wounds to the chest after getting in a brawl on The Ave. Police Officers do not believe the stabbing or armed robbery were related to the previous assaults. As of Sunday night, the police were still looking for all assailants involved in the attacks, further unnerving a neighborhood shaken by recent violence.
Until the suspects have been apprehended, the Seattle Police have offered the following two tips to University students to avoid/survive attacks: "Avoid confrontation and dangerous situations whenever possible," and our favorite, "Avoid drinking alcohol because it can slow down your reaction to danger." None of this advice has made anyone feel safer.
