Get Out: Steep at the Varsity Theater
Sometimes a good ski movie can console you during an off year, but we're already having a record-breaking snow season (ok, it's no 1998, but still, the quality and volume of the snow we've been getting this year is reminiscent of our days growing up in Utah for what that's worth). So maybe you don't need a powder porn flick to fuel your stoke, but we're thinking that Steep (showing in a limited run at the Varsity) will be worth a viewing regardless. (It's a limited run, and we think tomorrow night is the last night, but we can't tell from the website or their phone recording, so you might want to hustle out and see it tonight.)
The trailer features some stunning cinematography, and it's an increasingly rare chance to see Doug Coombs (RIP) stomp some of the world's most notorious lines that are off limits to in-bounds plebeians like us. Plus, it takes on the subject of risk-vs-reward in big-mountain skiing, a topic that's been very ever-present on our mind given what's happened here in Washington this winter.

How about a word of moderation regarding this ski porn? Some poor sap died last week filming this stuff.

Just got back from watching the movie. Bilco, for the love of the ski gods, please go see Steep, and then you will see how ridiculously ironic it is for you to suggest that what I said about ski porn merits "moderation." A large chunk of the movie is dedicated to discussing the risk/reward ratio for big mountain skiers. Anyone who is a big mountain skier and wants to star in movies could give a shit about moderation, and the last insult I would ever pay any of them is timidity or meekness in word or thought.
