Go Drink Beer This Weekend - Strange Brewfest

Are you feeling lazy this winter in Seattle? It's been raining and dark (well, not so much this week), and maybe you just haven't felt like doing much or going anywhere. Well, it's time you got off your ass to do something about it; like go to a beer festival.

If you've never been out to Port Townsend, this weekend is a great time to make the trip. Water Street Brewing will be hosting their 4th Annual Strange Brewfest on Saturday and Sunday. More than 35 NW brewers will be pouring beers. We don't have a list of beers for the festival, but they should have more than a few special treats.

Water Street head brewer Skip Madsen (aka "The Wookie") has always done an amazing job with his beers and is guaranteed to have some great beers on tap. Skip ended up at Water Street after serving as head brewer at both Big Time and Boundary Bay, so it's safe to say he has some good experience. We recently visited Port Townsend and really enjoyed the Sheba Coffee Stout and the Panama Red.

Seattlest attended this festival two years ago and had a blast during the Saturday session. The festival takes place under a tent in the parking lot behind the brewery, right next to the water, as well as inside the brewery. The year we went there was a dunk tank to sink some of the brewery employees, as well as a contest to score on The Wookie with a hockey puck. It's a friendly crowd and there is plenty of good beer, food and music. Although, this Seattlest somehow ended up sitting at the front bar during the festival drinking Jaeger with the bartender...which led to some very awful dancing....and then to a rough walk to the hotel (Suggestion - stay away from rocky beaches when drunk).

There are many hotels in Port Townsend within walking distance, and since it's not summer you should have no problem finding a room at the last minute.

It was another great year in PT for the Strange Brewfest. As usual however, many of the kegs blew early. With my big hair wig on, I tore it up on the dance floor with my comrades from Rogue’s brewpub in Issaquah.

My favorite was the basil infused pilsner (billed as a “basilner”), which tasted much better than it sounds. It could be the best beer to have with pizza ever produced. There was also a mouth burning chili beer that got folks talking, but I was not able to get a swig of it myself.

No drunken fire juggling this year, what’s up with that?
