We may have the lowest crime rate in 40 years, but it sure doesn't feel like it.

The guy cops thought might have killed Shannon Harps did not kill Shannon Harps. At least, his DNA didn't match samples found at the scene. He'll likely be released today. Once again, cops are suspect-less in the murder which happened three weeks ago now, and the terrifying possibility that Harps was murdered at random by a guy cops will never catch seems more and more likely. The P-I's Ambreen Ali reports that self-defense experts Home Alive received an "avalanche" of calls from people seeking to enroll in classes.

Madrona Elementary was the scene of heightened security in the wake of the murder of 14-year-old DeChe Morrison, which cops think was gang-related. So reports Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on Slog. We attended Madrona Elementary, and back then--even though it was the height of the West Coast gang era--the scariest thing that happened was when our teachers claimed that you "had to know cursive by the fourth grade." It was never clear what would happen if you didn't know cursive in the fourth grade. Anyway, we'd assumed that the place was even safer now that its surrounded by bistro-style restaurants instead of dingy mom-and-pop groceries, but evidently not. Guards were posted at all entrances. Children practiced cursive writing as planned, presumably.

The Times' Natalie Singer has more details about the guy who coerced a 12-year-old into becoming a prostitute:
Steven L. Leonard, 23, met the seventh-grader on a sidewalk in Seattle on Jan. 9 and persuaded her to run away from home with him, according to charging documents filed Tuesday by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.Um. Ick. The only thing that can soothe us is the baby polar bear.Leonard allegedly had sex with the girl several times and gave her tips on how to work as a prostitute, including how much money to charge for various sexual acts, according to charging papers.
A man then paid the girl for oral sex and she later handed over most of the cash to Leonard, according to the charging documents.

McGinn is Mayor

Well, when you went to Madrona it was the home of the APP program. The neighborhood might be nicer and that might help, but the loss of alot of upper middle class white kids doesn't.
