Next Season Will Be Mike Holmgren's Last as Seahawks Coach

In a press conference that's going on right now, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren announced that 2008 will be his final year as head coach of the Seahawks.

Holmgren is not retiring. He did not rule out returning to coaching in the future, but did say he would "take a break."

He said he would leave the issue of who would succeed him as coach up to the Seahawks front office, saying "it wouldn't be appropriate" for him to ask for any say on that.

When asked if presumed successor Jim Mora Jr. would have a different role this year, Holmgren said no, that the defensive staff will remain the same.

Holmgren did specify changes on the offensive staff. Former Husky coach Keith Gilbertson is the new wide receivers coach (former WR coach Nolan Cromwell left to become the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M).

On a rather touching personal note, Holmgren discussed his wife's role in the decision: "It had to be OK with her," Holmgren said.
