Seattlest thinks our city is lucky to count Grist as a native child. It's a helluva publication that always gets at the, um, grist of the matter. They use humor wisely and since, as we noted yesterday, we're a tree-hugging hippy, we love what they stand for.
But when MvB pointed out to us yesterday that they are still looking for an Executive Editor we decided it was time to go public with a nagging suspicion we've been harboring. Namely, there's got to be something seriously wrong with the culture at that place.
As far as we can remember, Grist has been looking for an Executive Editor for months now. Heck, MvB noticed it on CL around Thanksgiving and before that, we'd seen it re-posted there every two weeks for at least two months.
Now, we'd like to give Grist the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to extremely high standards that force them to toss every application they've received. But we can't. You see, prior to this round of posting, we remember seeing Grist's ad for an Executive Editor crop up on CL every nine months to a year or so.
We don't have the inside scoop or anything, but having worked as a writer and editor in this town and at our share of non profits, we can imagine that the problem is one of a few things.
Either they offer pay so low that they can't find a qualified editor (definite possibility); they make staff do much more than their job description in the name of "the cause" and word is getting around (another good possibility); or the publisher is completely bonkers and drives Executive Editors away faster than we can say "Expand Light Rail" (possible, but pure speculation).
Whatever the reason, we hope Grist figures its shit out soon cause we'd hate to see it disappear in a cloud of smog.
Much thanks to MvB for being creative enough to come up with that image when our brains couldn't come up with one for this post ourselves.

you guys are like the valleywag of grist! But it does make one wonder. Maybe they should offer $50 per month via Craigslist. Worked for us.
