Amazing Story of Ex-Garfield Star Tony Harris' Descent into Madness

Tony Harris was a star basketball player at Garfield High School and Washington State University. After college, he played in a variety of international pro leagues: The Philippines, South Korea, Brazil.

He was in his second stint in Brazil this fall, having left his pregnant wife behind in Seattle, when he disappeared, claiming that his life was in danger. He was later found dead. What went wrong? Possibly, it was Harris' own mind. ESPN's Wright Thompson traveled to Brazil, met with Harris's teammates, visited his hotel room, talked to his cab driver, got emails from his family. He's written an incredible story; here's a sample:

Wireless Internet is his best friend, the connection making him feel safe. He needs it. The e-mails coming to the United States from Tony Harris are scary. Just the other day, he wrote his mother-in-law: I know that I can be paranoid at times but I know when I hear things. And when people stop talking when I come into the area, I just pray that I am wrong Connie I want to see my family again and I LOVE MY WIFE SO MUCH I WANT TO SEE OUR CHILD THAT LORI AND I ARE HAVING. I DIDN'T COME BACK HERE FOR THEM TO SET ME UP AND KILL ME.
Read the whole incredible thing.
