A Week of Soup Weather

The dispiriting weather forecast--below, via Google.

Friggin' cold and friggin' rainy. On days like these, there is but one sure pick-me-up: soup.

In a typically magnificent essay her classic How to Cook a Wolf, the food writer M.F.K. Fisher made an inarguable case that, if you can make tea, it's silly not to try and make soup.

The natural progression from boiling water to boiling water with something in it can hardly be avoided, and in most cases is heartily to be wished for. As a steady diet, plain water is inclined to make thin fare, and even saints, of whom there are an unexpected number these days, will gladly agree that a few herbs and a carrot or two and maybe a meager bit of bone on feast-days can mightily improve the somewhat monotonous flavor of the hot liquid.

Soup, in other words, is good.

Word.

Your timeliness astounds me. I went to Safeway last night and bought two big boneless beef rump roasts (only $1.97/lb.!), a whole chicken, a package each of ground beef and ground pork, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsley, basil, garlic, and bell peppers to add to the carrots and celery I have at home. My goal? The creation of assorted soups, stews, chilis, and meatloaves to tide me through the coming weeks.

BTW, I made a thick, creamy sweet potato soup last week and had to restrain myself from slurping the whole damn pot.

God, I love soup weather.
