Seahawks 35, Redskins 14

Not sure we've ever seen a win for which the credit belongs so overwhelmingly to the defense. For most of the game, the Seahawks' defensive line was able to get pressure with only four rushers. By establishing that, they were able to drop guys back into coverage, which led to the two pick sixes.

The offense? The special teams? Not so great. But let's enjoy this one for now, shall we?

Here's the scene at Seattlest HQ after Marcus Trufant's interception return for a touchdown put the Hawks up by two TD. Below that picture, the official Seattlest game diary.

Pre-game: "Tom Hammond's mouth looks like an asshole."

Pre-game: Jamie Moyer fires up the crowd. An ex-girlfriend texts us you look a lot like Jamie Moyer from behind." We're not sure how to take that.

11:34, 1st q: Hasselbeck misses Ben Obomanu, wide-open for a sure touchdown after Shawn Springs had fallen down.

7:17, 1st q: Big play by Big Play Jordan Babineaux--he pushes the man he's blocking on a punt return into the ball at the Hawks 25. But because that guy had run out of bounds first, it's a penalty for illegal touching. The Redskins have to punt again. On the ensuing rekick, Nate Burleson gets a 20 yard return to the Skins 45. That ended up being a 40 yard penalty.

5:05, 1st q: Alexander has a decent run, fumbles at the end of it, but he was obviously down.

4:27, 1st q: NBC shows footage from pre-game warmups of Hasselbeck making throws and grimacing because of his hurt wrist. If we lose this game because Hasselbeck got hurt in the fucking Atlanta game...

3:54, 1st q: Leonard Weaver with a 17 yard off-tackle for a TD. It was the 2005 pre-season when Weaver got our notice in a game with a run not unlike that one. And here he is scoring a TD in a playoff game. Amazing. Turns out it's the longest rushing TD in Hawks playoff history. 7-0 Hawks.

LIST OF SEAHAWKS WHO HAVE SCORED A RUSHING TD IN A PLAYOFF GAME:
David Hughes--1 (2 yds, 1983 vs. Denver)
Curt Warner--2 (1 yd, 1983 vs. Miami; 2 yds., 1983 vs. Miami)
Dave Krieg--2 (1 yd, 1988 vs. Cinci)
Shaun Alexander--7 (1 yd, 2003 vs. Green Bay; 1 yd, 2003 vs. Green Bay; 1 yd, 2003 vs. Green Bay; 1 yd, 2005 vs. Carolina; 1 yd, 2005 vs. Carolina; 4 yds, 2006 vs. Chicago; 13 yds, 2006 vs. Chicago)
Matt Hasselbeck--1 (6 yds., 2005 vs. Washington)
Leonard Weaver--1 (17 yds, 2007 vs. Washington)

2:21, 1st q: Patrick Kerney jumps the snap count, splits a double-team and wraps up Clinton Portis for a loss.

13:25, 2nd q: Redskins get a huge 3rd down pickup on 3rd and 13. Much consternation in the basement that, on this play, Kerney had dropped back into coverage instead of rushing the passer. We encourage patience, that it's a good thing to show and might work later.

12:12, 2nd q: "I am so exhausted." "Think how the Seahawks feel!"

11:31, 2nd q: Hawks' backup DT Howard Green makes a touchdown-saving play. Marcus Trufant had gotten lost in coverage, leaving Santana Moss wide open in the middle of the field for a sure touchdown. But Green hit Skins QB Todd Collins just as he was about to throw, and the pass was way short. God bless you, Howard Green, who I'd never even heard of.

Commercial: Rob Riggle, who's hilarious on the Daily Show, is doing a Budweiser ad. We want to see the ad, expecting it will be good. It's terrible. During the game, we seen four or five more of Riggle's ads--they are all terrible. We hope Riggle got a big paycheck, because we don't want to see the guy ever again. We start chanting "PAY-check, PAY-check."

10:53, 2nd q: Coming back from commercial, we see that the Safeco Field grounds crew has combed "NBC TOM CHRIS" into the infield dirt. It's actually "Cris", guys.

10:40, 2nd q: Great move by Burleson to get open. He may be the best receiver in Hawks history in beating his man at the line.

9:02, 2nd q: Burleson's catch got us close enough for a Josh Brown 50-yard FG. 10-0 Hawks.

7:03, 2nd q: Left one-on-one with Reche Caldwell, Kelly Jennings closes very fast on a curl route and knocks the ball away. Great coverage.

4:53, 2nd q: Kerney goes back in coverage again, and Leroy Hill makes an amazing play, pushing his blocker back into Collins and then grabbing Collins and taking him down. This time, Kerney in coverage worked.

Seattlest Seth: "Kerney's getting pressure, but he doesn't have a sack."

Seattlest David: "Actually, Kerney has one big sac."

2:00, 2nd q: According to a graphic on screen, NBC's halftime report will include "Andrea Kramer on David Garrard." Not sure we want to see that.

Halftime: Smoking as many cigarettes as we can.

13:06, 3rd q: Alexander has a 3-yard run on first down, which isn't terrible, but he could've had a lot more if he had broken just one tackle. (Alexander finished with 46 yards on 15 carries, barely three per. Morris had only 4 carries. Weaver had only 1, the touchdown. That distribution needs to change.)

7:14, 3rd q: "You know what the problem is? We don't have a single player who can make a fucking play."

7:13, 3rd q (next play): D.J. Hackett catches a 35-yard pass from Hasselbeck. We forgot about him.

5:15, 3rd q: Hasselbeck tries to run for a first down, and takes a Fred Smoot helmet in the thigh. Josh Brown hits another field goal. 13-0 Hawks.

:38, 3rd q: With the Redskins 4th and 1 from the Hawks' 27, Dusty yells "watch the play-action!" It is play-action, and Brian Russell somehow gets beat down the field by conspiracy theorist Mike Sellers, a 32-year-old fullback. Russell, a safety, is almost assuredly slower than all three Hawks starting linebackers. He has to tackle Sellers to stop him from catching what would've been a sure touchdown.

:01, 3rd q: Deon Grant makes an amazing, leaping batdown of a Collins pass.

15:00, 4th q: But it's all for naught, as Collins throws a TD pass to Anthony Randel-El. 13-7 Hawks.

14:49, 4th q: Much debate about whether the Hawks should just play conservative on offense here, as well as the defense is playing.

14:09, 4th q: Hasselbeck certainly isn't playing conservative. He throws into double coverage, and LaRon Landry (playing in Sean Taylor's stead at free safety) makes an interception.

12:44, 4th q: Collins, who NBC has helpfully told us has a perfect QB rating in the 4th quarter this year, throws his second TD of the quarter, to Santana Moss. 14-13 Redskins.

12:44, 4th q: Disbelief in the basement. Most said: "That happened fast." In just over two minutes, the Hawks have lost the lead. And the offense looks terrible. Dark, dark times.

12:36, 4th q: Burleson can't catch the kickoff, it takes a Metrodome turf bounce over his head and a Redskins guy grabs it and runs it in for a touchdown. We burst out laughing.

12:36, 4th q: By rule, you can't advance a kickoff like that, so it's not a TD.

11:41, 4th q: Incredible! The Hawks defense--which must be just exhausted--make a huge stop, then Shane Suisham missed a 30-yard field goal--shortest miss of his career. (After looking back, this seems like the key play of the game--the Skins would've had huge momentum, instead it swings back toward the Hawks). So there is a Shaun having a worse game than Alexander.

9:49, 4th q: And Hasselbeck throws yet another interception to LaRon Landry. Holmgren is being roundly criticized for playing Hasselbeck against Atlanta--obviously, Matt's injury is affecting his play.

At this point in the game, Hasselbeck QB rating is 51.2, worst of the year other than the Pittsburgh game.

9:42, 4th q: Washington's first false start of the game. Not your best day, 12th Man. We are so depressed right now.

8:16, 4th q: Trufant with great coverage on Moss. Washington has to punt.

7:18, 4th q: Burleson makes a great catch on the sideline over Shawn Springs.

6:12, 4th q: Jubilation as Hasselbeck finds a wide open D.J. Hackett for a TD pass. After the game, it's clear that Hasselbeck didn't so much "find" Hackett open as "make" him open. He says in a postgame interview that LaRon Landry had made interceptions by reading his eyes--he was able to, in his words, "use that"--in other words, look Landry off and then throw to Hackett. Old man Pollard makes a nice catch on the two-point conversion. 21-14 Hawks.

6:06, 4th q: Huge runback on kickoff is partially nullified by Mike Sellers penalty.

5:56, 4th q: Wow! WOW! WOW! Trufant makes easy interception as Moss doesn't even see pass. Dusty yells "Go out of bounds." But Trufant risks a runback. Hawks make some nice blocks downfield--a pancake block by Brandon Mebane frees Trufant. We run towards the stairs, throw my notebook toward the washing machine, with my right hand, my pen off the stairs with my left hand, race up the stairs two at a time, run out on to the porch and jump up and down like an angry gorilla, screaming "GO SEAHAWKS!" We race back downstairs to join the celebration--you see a picture of that above. 28-14 Hawks.

3:48, 4th q: A tremendous leaping catch by Moss on 3rd and 8 keeps the Skins alive.

2:46, 4th q: But Moss can't come up with it on 4th and 8 from the Hawks 31.

2:00, 4th q: Alexander gets three runs and manages -1 yards total. Plackemeier manages a half-decent punt for once, Redskins back at their own 25--they still have a chance, however slim.

:44, 4th q: Big Play Babs does it again, an interception return for a TD. He ran in unmolested, and even took off both sides of his chinstrap before he crossed the goal line. That'll make 35 points in the 4th quarter, after 14 in the first three quarters. And if you had told me twenty minutes ago that we'd win this one by three touchdowns...

We finish this just as the 2nd half of the Pittsburgh/Jacksonville game starts. Funny, the Hawks' first half seemed to have taken forever, while the other game's first half seemed to fly by.

FYI--the drive to Green Bay is 28 hours. A flight is $900...any takers?
