Point-Counterpoint: The Seahawks Will Lose on Saturday

crossfire.jpgOn Saturday the beloved Seahawks will play the Redskins in the opening round of the NFL Playoffs. Taking up the issue on whether or not the Hawks will lose are author Pauls Toutonghi, marketing genius Jason McDonald, and comedy festival standout Dusty Warren.

YES! by Pauls Toutonghi

I actually am hopeful that we will win. Please print this. I believe it is a possibility. But -- and this is a significant but -- I do see the following DANGER scenario.

1. The Redskins are the best team in the NFC.

2. Collins is a quick, accurate passer -- and he riddles the secondary with enough short passes to throw off their balance.

3. Now off-balance, the defense gives up 125 yards to Clinton Portis.

4. The Redskins secondary, playing inspired defense because they are playing for a fallen friend, has a great day.

5. Matt Hasselbeck is actually more injured than we think.

6. Football proves -- once again, for the millionth time -- that it is a game played, yes, on confidence and intensity. Which the Redskins have, in spades. We have neither. We are not confident. We do not swagger. And our coach, God help us, is a nice man who looks like a walrus.

NO! by Jason McDonald

The Redskins are the hottest team in the NFC. That's why the Seahawks are going to beat them on Saturday.

Washington rides a four game winning streak that started after they buried their All Pro safety, Sean Taylor, to a first-round matchup with the Seahawks on Saturday. They are playing terrific football in memory of their fallen brother. Some people would say this makes them a formidable opponent.

The way I see it, they needed a four game win streak to finish over .500. Just over a month ago, they lost to the Buffalo Bills. Only two of their wins this year came against teams with winning records. One of those was against the Cowboys, who already had home field advantage wrapped up.

This is not a very good football team.

For anyone but the Patriots, winning four straight games in the NFL is very difficult. For a team as mediocre as the Redskins to pull it off, they had to play over their heads for four straight weeks. There can't be much left in the tank.

Washington turned tragedy into an inspired December run into the playoffs. They're America's team right now. Sorry America, December is over.

On Saturday, the Redskins won't be able to put up enough points on a Seahawks defense featuring four Pro Bowl starters to keep up with a very efficient Seattle offense.

REBUTTLE! by Dusty Warren

Being a Seahawk fan during the playoffs is a lot like having a band aid on a part of your body that is blessed with an abundance of hair (back, shoulders, forearms, neck, etc....sorry ladies, but I'm not single).

The fact is, the Seahawks are NOT good enough to win the Super Bowl, and there's only a slight chance that we're good enough to even MAKE the Super Bowl.

For argument's sake, let's pretend that Dallas oversleeps and Green Bay decides to support the WGA by not using any scripted plays, and we somehow get to the Super Bowl. Now, unless Tennessee pulls a "music city miracle" in 3 consecutive games, we would be facing a team in the Super Bowl that will beat us. So, given that information, wouldn't it be better to just rip the band aid off quickly (i.e., lose this weekend), rather than pull it off slowly, prolonging the pain (waiting until the Super Bowl to lose)?

As a life-long Seahawks' fan (trust me, they've made me cry on more than 1 occasion in my life) I would want nothing more than for them to win a Super Bowl, but it ain't gonna happen this year, so this really isn't a matter of "Will we beat the Redskins?" to me, it's a matter of "I wonder what day in January I will be sad". I figure it's best to deal with it now, while I still have some leftover holiday sugar to feed to my depression.

I have two words for all of you: Nate Burleson.

I have some more words too, mostly "Really Loud 12th Man," "I'll be watching the game in my lucky briefs," and, of course, "Our team is fully gelled."
