New Music Video, Perspective for Eddie Vedder

Vedder’s first solo music video—for his critically lauded and Grammy-nominated Into the Wild song “Guaranteed”—airs on VH1 (and VH1.com) on Monday. Perfect timing, then, for the ever-more-famous guy to bump into his 1992 self while browsing Easy Street’s vinyl bins. Serendipity!

1992 Eddie (strokes soul patch; sings to himself): I’ll tip my hat to the new constitution… take a bow for the new revolution…

2008 Eddie (spots 1992 Eddie): Hey, are you ... ?

Young Eddie looks up, scrutinizes 2008 Eddie. Finally, they shake hands.

1992: Still got the hair! And that jacket!

2008: And the band.

1992: Fuckin’ A. We finally got a decent drummer?

2008: Yeah, we brought a great one into the fold.

1992: Alright. The media machine still call us grunge?

2008: Rock, man. It’s just rock now.

Older Eddie smiles. Younger Eddie looks troubled.

1992: Does Kurt still hate us?

2008 (grimaces): Nah ... A lot changes in the next couple years. Feelings change.

1992: Yeah? What about fuckin’ Republicans? And injustice?

2008: No change there.

1992 (leans closer): How do I feel about, you know, fame?

2008: Different ... sometimes.

1992: Huh. But I still live in Seattle? Not Spain or some shit?

2008: Yeah, right here. California, though, it’s pretty nice. I—you—we—know some people there. Hollywood people. And the surfing …

1992: Hollywood people?

2008: Directors, producers. We’re buddies with Phil Donahue and Sean Penn. Real people.

1992: Fuckin’ Spicoli and an old talk show host?

2008: Thanks to Spicoli, we’re up for a Grammy, maybe an Oscar.

1992: Fuckin’ Grammys. Sounds like we sold out.

2008: Not at all. There’s bigger stuff to worry about--global warming, another Bush, the next generation. Our voice can help create change.

1992: Heavy. We doing any solo work?

2008: Our first video is about to air on VH1.

1992: VH1? Who are we, Michael Bolton?

2008: Don’t worry, man. It’s all working out. The Who even gets back together.

1992: Fuck yeah.

The Eddies study each other for a long moment, then nod, crack grins, and head off in opposite directions.

Thanks for this. It reminds me of...so much.

I love this but...
In reading the press release, did you notice the spelling of Truffant: "Trufoe"?? Huh?
