Gregoire on Viaduct: "It's Coming Down."

alaviaductlolcat.JPGGlory be! Is this the year all our wishes come true? It wasn't but yesterday that we asked whether a decision would be made on the Viaduct this year.

Well, Chris McGann of the P-I asked Governor Christine Gregoire about it. And look!

"It's coming down in 2012. I'm taking it down. That's the timeline. I'm not going to fudge on it. And if we don't have some alternative by then, boy are we going to have a mess on our hands because it's coming down."
Woo-hoo! You told the Viaduct...Aw shit--there's a catch. Of course.

It won't come down until 2012...but Gregoire has an election to win between now and then.

"What happens if she doesn't get re-elected, will she then just be a crazy chick with a jackhammer?" wonders VespaSkank on LiveJournal Seattle.

The Viaduct seems to have taken on a life of its own. It survives year after year despite being ugly, old, and widely derided. (Kind of like [insert name of celeb-reality contestant here]!) If Dino Rossi somehow wins the election, we'll know who to blame.

Meanwhile, if we're Gregoire? We're taking I-5 from now on.

I'd take this idea one step further, tear the viaduct down immediately and let nature take it's course.

If downtown traffic gets as bad as the naysayers say it will, I'll bet we can quickly put together a package for some solution. Hell, put it on the November ballot, let people decide how much they want to spend on this project.

If traffic doesn't swell and overcome us all, well, then, I guess we didn't need a viaduct in the first place...
