Grab a Beer to Ring in the New Year

Still need to pick up some beverages for a party tonight? Don't disqualify beer from your plans just because it's not what most people drink at midnight on NYE.

We know, we know....many of you like to be fancy pants when it comes to NYE and break out the champagne, even if you don't really enjoy it all that much. Hey, this Seattlest was even seen drinking champagne for the Christmas toast this year (not to mention he won the long distance cork popping contest at his girlfriend's family party; now that earns respect) and it is lovely for a special occasion. But, right after the toast it was back to the good beer I'd been drinking.

While this Seattlest is far from an expert on bubbly (We'll leave that to Ronald), choices seem to start at paying $10 for a bottle of the sparkling wine equivalent of Bud Light, or about $30 for a good value bottle of champagne. Screw that. If you really appreciate champagne, then by all means enjoy. But, if you're like many of us it might be a good idea to save your hard earned money and stick to something you know and love: beer. You can get a truly exceptional beer for less than the price of a cheap bottle of champagne.

Give these beer suggestions a try for NYE. You can still have something special for the occasion, yet not break the bank if you are buying for a crowd.

Here is the one we will definitely be popping at midnight:

Girardin Gueuze Black Label. Gueuze is a type of lambic -- a style that is only brewed in Belgium with the help of wild yeast. The result is slightly ciderlike with a complex sourness, a dose of citrus and heavy carbonation. If you have never tried a Gueuze, this could change your perception of beer forever. You can tell your friends it's "Belgian Champagne." $7.99 per 375 milliliters

The experts at places such as Bottleworks, 99 Bottles or Malt and Vine can help you find many choices for NYE beers. Tell them Seattlest sent you and you get a 50% discount (ok, not really...but you can try).

Here is to hoping that your holidays are filled with wonderful beers this year....enjoy your NYE.
