This fall we are combining our love of the football and our dream of learning to cook. On Sunday morning, following a trip to a local farmer’s market/major supermarket chain, we will be preparing a meal from the city of the Seahawks opponent. Then at halftime we will throw our badly burned hands in the air and make hot dogs.
Seahawks vs. Grits with Ham and Homemade Applesauce preview
Rarely do we think, “I really wish The South had won the Civil War.” This, however, was the case over the weekend as we scoured the city in search of grits. We're pretty sure someone looking for bagels in Charlotte wouldn't have this problem.
Ballard, Magnolia, Queen Anne, and Montlake-- we were shutdown everywhere we looked. Finally we realized our mistake, and decided that we should go to the one place where all of Seattle’s cultures come together and are celebrated, the University Village QFC.
The grits themselves were quite similar to the game, very dull. This is why we provided cheese and Tabasco sauce, the rushing and passing game of our meal. Sadly the Hawks' offense never added their cheese, Tabasco, or even a grain of salt.
Also much like the Hawks performance we kind of sleepwalked through the preparations and forgot to add the butter. Look, it's late in the season, we're going to have meals to prepare in January, and maybe we spent all week reading our press clippings. It was a wake-up call, and we are going to sharpen our focus over the next couple of weeks.
On the bright side, we enjoyed making the applesauce. It’s pretty easy, you just peel and chop the apples, ‘sauce-pan’ them with some water sugar and cinnamon, and mash, mash, mash them. However, it cost about five times as much, took about an hour and a half and although tasty, not as good as just buying a jar of the stuff.
Another thanks to North Carolina (via Portland) Katey.

AFTER:

It was grits in the first half, but as the awful game progressed we switched to the festive Egg Nog and brandy to numb the pain.

The fourth quarter was all brandy mixed with whiskey and holiday M&Ms
