Sharon Jones, Beautiful Funk Soul Goddess

sharonjones-banner.jpgBellingham jazz funksters, Megatron, had a few impressive solos, but for the most part, their songs were fairly simple and somewhat repetitive. But we're not here to harsh on Megatron. They did a good job warming the cold December crowd and getting everyone excited for our lady of the evening, the illustrious Ms. Sharon Jones and her acclaimed backing band, The Dap Kings.

If Megatron had the crowd warmed up, The Dap Kings got them red hot, playing a few funky songs before a lengthy, stroking introduction of Ms. Jones.

When finally she took the stage, the crowd erupted. And before Jones had belted out even a single note, it was an obvious love fest within Neumos. Her presence was almost palpable in the air and we felt so fortunate to be a part of it. Her energy was staggering and contagious.

It wasn't long before our love fest became a full-on dance party.

Sharon Jones danced like Tina Turner and James Brown rolled into one explosive package. She smiled and laughed with the crowd. She invited men and women on stage to dance with her. She sang like no one we've ever heard before. She sang from somewhere deep down -- from somewhere within the heavy soul of a woman finally collecting on decades of unpaid dues.

In short, Seattlest has attended countless concerts this year and this one was easily the most fun. For real.
