Cal Worthington and His "Dog" Spot, 1987

Last year we invoked the name of Cal Worthington as a flimsy excuse to post the amazing "Montgomery Flea Market" ad. Now, we actually have an ad from the master himself. Big ups to Cal for wearing a Mariners jacket (and also for the zebra). There is a definite lack of men on horses leading zebras around in our television advertising today.

Worthington, incidentally, is still alive--he turned 87 last month. This terrific profile in the New York Times gives you all the info you want, plus this: Worthington flew 29 combat missions over Germany in World War II.

Cal Worthington kicks ass. I remember watching his commercial when I was little and actually enjoying them. Don't know why.

Cal is up in Alaska now. He has a festival at his Anchorage Ford dealership every year in the late summer. He still has those same cheesy commercials that he's been playing since I first saw them in California in the early 80s.
