A Friend Explains Why He Shouted Obscenities at the Ref of a Junior-Varsity High School Basketball Game

shout.gifA friend of ours got a little overexcited during the Franklin/Garfield JV game. Still, in the cold light of morning, he considered his decision to shout obscenities at the ref to be a sound one.

We asked him via email, "How so?"

Our friend:
Please note that this referee gave a "thumbs up" to a Franklin fan after she cheered one of his questionable calls that favored the Quakers.

He also chose not to reward Garfield with a technical (or even a reshoot) after the PA announcer started playing music during a Garfield player's late game free throw attempt (which he missed).

And the final straw, he refused to acknowledge a BLATANT foul on the final shot of the game that should have put (the JV) Garfield squad on the line shooting 2 with no time left.

It was ONLY at this point that the shouted obscenities began.

Understanding that it was just a JV game, I still believe it was 100% justified.

Another friend:
You don't need to apologize for screaming obscenities at a JV referee in a high school game.

This is America, the Constitution guarantees you that right.

Our friend again:
No apology was implied or stated in my response.

That's a good one, Seth. For a minute there I thought you were serious.

Shouting obscenities at a JV high school basketball referee? Wow.

Sorry, for the second profane usage.

I think this underscores the true animosity in the Garfield-Franklin rivalry.

Go Bulldogs.
