Capitol Hill, You're the Top "Hip"

hood-to-hood.jpg
We love lists. Which is why we're a little sad that we didn't know about Amazon.com's UnSpun until we read The Paper Noose's post on Georgetown's place in the Top "Hip" Neighborhoods to Live in Seattle, WA.

There's nothing we love better than completely arbitrary lists with no discernible criteria beyond kneejerk personal opinion -- except maybe passing them along. According to UnSpun users, the top 10 "hip" neighborhoods are:

1. Capitol Hill (surprise, surprise)
2. Fremont
3. Belltown (sorry, Ronald)
4. Ballard
5. Queen Anne
6. Wallingford
7. University District
8. Green Lake
9. Beacon Hill (really?!)
10. Pioneer Square

Georgetown, the Paper Noose's stomping ground is nipping at their heels at #11, and Columbia City, West Seattle, and Downtown aren't far behind. Although neither is Bellevue (#18).

Wedgwood, our old nemesis, comes in at #76, behind places like "Blakely Alley by U-Village," Covington, and Monroe. That's a loosy-goosy definition of "neighborhood," even for Seattle.

On the other hand, the list is editable -- sign up for UnSpun and you can boost your own neighborhood's rankings, or lower Wedgwood's. We corrected a glaring oversight ourselves: Rainier Beach was nowhere to be found, so we added it. It's already #60 -- with a (metaphorical) bullet!

And Top "Hip" Neighborhood is just the tip of the iceberg -- other community-generated Seattle lists include Coolest Tech Startup, Best Brunch, Best Place to Buy a Wii, Top Pizza Parlors (and no, "none of them" is not #1, smartass former New Yorkers), and Top "Artsy" Movie Theaters.

Beacon Hill makes the cut because that's where all the gays are now buying houses (and gay = hip). Plus there's the forthcoming, eagerly-anticipated light rail.

I'm amused, but not surprised, that Wedgwood is considered so deeply un-hip.

I am surprised that Green Lake is #8. I grew up in Green Lake, I live in Green Lake, and I can't think of a single hip thing about it.

Or are lakes just inherently hip?

Renton > Downtown

Love it.

Where the hell is Irvington??

Beacon Hill gets my half-assed-interrobanged question because even their local blogger has to ask "What's to like?" But if the gays are moving in, then I'm sure it's on the way up.

Think people might be talking about Capitol Hill's child bearing hips.

But, hey!, we have a neighborhood unspun list too -- the 15th/19th Ave Biz Rankings list

We find that most of the time you can't actually log in to vote on the rankings, however. But apparently somebody in our 'hood who really, really likes the Holiday Craft Shop has been able to get in. Thank goodness.

Oh, and how about this 'Seattleist' site on the Best Seattle Blogs list Love those guys!

I absolutely adore that the list has "hip" in scare quotes. And the one that does the same for "artsy."

I must be extremely unhip, as I recently moved from #5 to #36. So sad.

Oh god. Maybe it's time to consider moving off of Capitol Hill.

yes, yes spread the word about how much hipper than Wedgwood all these neighborhoods are.
