Ah, football. We love it. It’s easily our favorite sport to watch as it gets our usual docile selves all fired up and yelling at the television every week. Basketball, even with its fast pace and high scoring, is a bore. And baseball? Baseball is almost as fun to watch as golf or the Lifetime channel.
But for all of football’s glory, there remains its biggest upset. Which is that it’s one of those high-testosterone sports that invariably draws a large number of meathead spectators. Men (usually) whose very existence thrives off of brutality, ego and a level of ignorance unmatched by the very dumbest of animals.
We don’t mean to generalize, of course. We’re not trying to draw some parallel between football (or its fans) and social violence. That’d be ridiculous. We’re just saying, take an ignorant bigot to a football game, fill him up with beer and, well, something bad is bound to happen.
Such was the case at last Saturday’s Apple Cup game. After being kicked out of Husky Stadium, an intoxicated, 20 year-old Kent man was being taken home in a taxi cab when he began harassing and assaulting the driver, a 48 year-old Sikh man.
From the PI:
Trying to escape the attack, the 48-year-old victim stopped in a car pool lane Saturday night on Interstate 5, near Columbian Way, and scrambled out, state troopers said. His attacker had punched, choked and bitten him, calling him an "Iraqi terrorist," according to police reports.
The suspect knocked off the victim's turban and tore out clumps of his hair, according to reports. The beating continued as the victim fell onto the road. The victim briefly was hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center for injuries that included a concussion and bite marks on his head, according to police and acquaintances.
The investigation is ongoing and the Sikh community wants the attack “taken seriously as a hate crime.” Personally, we're hoping this guy receives the maximum sentence available for his actions.
