Seattlest doesn't know crap about jazz. (Until we recently drank a Brother Thelonious, we thought Monk was actually a dude in an orange robe.) But staple a big-time Seattle rock drummer (above, going off solo) to a jazz act and we're interested enough to listen and learn.
The Macage Harybu trio, playing Seattle Drum School tonight, is just such an act: upright bassist Geoff Harper, keyboardist Ryan Burns, and (Soundgarden! Pearl Jam!) drummer Matt Cameron.
Per the press release:
Cameron is truly a multi-talented artist, currently exploring different tongues in the musical world. While still recording one of [his] personal projects in the studio, this trio ... found a creative balance and has decided to come out and play their interesting takes on Monk's classics plus some original compositions for all to enjoy.
Burns and Harper are famous in their respective musical field, too:
Burns ... has brought his special touch to different projects, working with diverse artists such as the Matt Jorgenson 451+, the Tom Marriott Willie Nelson Project, Bebop and Destruction to the Tacoma Symphony, in passing by the Food Network.Harper has performed with a horde of excellent musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Frisell, Stone Gossard, Jessica Williams, Ingrid Jensen, Kenny Kirkland, Jeff Hamilton, Phil Woods, Jay Clayton, Dawn Clement, Wayne Horvitz, Hans Teuber, Eyvind Kang ...
Though we now know from Monk, we're ignorant to most of the names above. (And we have no clue who or what a Macage Harybu might be.) But that's okay--we don't think one'll need to be jazz-ucated to get into this trio's sound.
