This fall we are combining our love of the football and our dream of learning to cook. On Sunday morning, following a trip to a local farmer’s market/major supermarket chain, we will be preparing a meal from the city of the Seahawks opponent. Then at halftime we will throw our badly burned hands in the air and make hot dogs.
This is our second go round with the city of St. Louis, which is a bit unfortunate because the Lou reached its culinary apex during the 1904 World’s Fair.
Previously we made Toasted Ravioli. However, this time the game starts at ten in the morning, so we searched for something that resembled breakfast more than Chinese food sandwiches or four meals on a single plate, and we found Gooey Butter Cake.
This coffee cake was first made by a German baker in 1930s St. Louis. Legend has it that he was trying to make regular cake and used the wrong proportion of ingredients. Maybe, or maybe he was trying blow up the Midwest with the infamous Nazi cake bomb, which thankfully Hitler’s scientists were never able to complete.
The bottom layer is yellow cake, and the top can either be made with butter or cream cheese.
We can’t find a recipe that includes cream cheese. We love us some of that creamy cheese, and often eat an entire tub before bed, so we’ll keep looking. However, we may just end up putting the butter in the Gooey Butter Cake. The gooey, will be the look in our eyes if DJ Hackett and the rest of the Hawks new passing offense can get the team their third win a row.
On Monday we’ll report back, and if you think you're so fucking great why not try and make the stuff as well. Then we can all compare notes as our fathers stare at us disapprovingly.
Recipe for Gooey Butter Cake

Tuesdays are Muppet Days

I have never heard of gooey butter cake before, but God knows I love butter. And cake.
I grew up 90 miles from St. Louis in Central Illinois. Gooey Butter cake made me what I am today... an overweight diabetic that can't even look at a piece without my glucose levels soaring. My mom made the BEST gooey butter cake in the world. She used cream cheese. I'll try to track down her recipe and send it along. It's heaven. It's made better with a glass of milk.
