Seahawk Makes Legendary Tackle
Placekickers are held in low regard by their football teammates.
No, that's too generous. Placekickers are held in no regard by their football teammates.
Imagine if the Superfriends had a guy whose sole power was to instantaneously hard-boil eggs. Batman and Aquaman would, we suspect, have the same respect for "The Ovomaster" that NFL players do for their kicker teammates.
But, Sunday, in the Seahawks' 30-23 win over the Bears, Seahawks kicker Josh Brown made a play that may go down as the greatest non-foot-related play in placekicker history when he tackled the Bears' Devin Hester on a kickoff.
Hester, for you non-football-nuts, is considered the best kick returner in football. He's got the NFL record for most touchdown returns in a season.
Now, it's not unheard of for a kicker to tackle a return man, but it usually happens as the return man is streaking toward the end zone and the kicker manages to dive and trip him.
Brown's tackle Sunday was a legitimate coverage play--he downed Hester at the Bears 27-yard-line.
Here's Brown corralling Hester...

And here's Brown's celebration, which FOX announcer Matt Vasgerian called "WWE-style." We think it's funny that Brown celebrates by raising his arms in the traditional "FG good" signal, as if that's the only way he knows how.

When we ran this in slo-mo, we saw that not only did Brown make the tackle, he very nearly stripped Hester (in that first photo, you can see Brown's hand about to hit the ball).
If anyone can think of a better non-kicking play by a kicker, please, enlighten us.
