Well, it's been a month, and that can only mean one thing: time for the next free edgy youth culture documentary, care of Scion. Last time around, the topic was blood diamonds in hip hop; this time it's all about nightclubbing in the late '80s NYC queer community.
Paris is Burning is all about New York fashion houses, but not the ones you may think you know. African American and Latino gay men and transgenders joined "houses" of their own making. This is where "voguing" (later popularized by Madonna's hit of the 90s) came from. Paris is Burning is fast, furious, and forceful: it's also an incisive look at race, class, and gender.
FABulous! Who doesn't like a good drag show accompanied by a in-depth discussion of socioeconomic status? Seriously though, when the movie came out in 1991, it got rave reviews and won a bijillion awards, including the 1991 SIFF Golden Space Needle Award for Best Documentary.
The film is free with RSVP here, but you gotta be 21+ because of the "cocktail reception" (aka free beer). Meanwhile, don't miss out on your chance to load up on Scion swag. Oversize sweatshirts and t-shirts galore!
8pm doors, 9pm film // Harvard Exit // 807 E Roy St // Free with RSVP, 21+
