Beloved Basketball Coach and Documentary Star Fired For No (Announced) Reason

Bill Resler, beloved coach of the Roosevelt High School girls basketball team, which was featured in the documentary Heart of the Game, was fired on the eve of the season, reports the Times' Craig Smith.

Roosevelt administrators aren't saying why, at least not publicly. Privately, according to Resler, they're telling parents he held forbidden offseason practices, which Resler denies.

Smith cites previous complaints against Resler that he encourages rough play and sometimes swears. Those haven't been firing offenses since 1892.

The few times we've seen Resler's teams play we've liked what we've seen. Even in close-fought games, his players are smiling, enjoying themselves--a far cry from the average high school basketball team, which runs primarily on fear of their coach screaming at them. Resler, at least when we've seen him, is having fun, not yelling.

You'll inspire a fair amount of devotion that way, and it seems Resler has:

Resler said he was "flabbergasted" and "bitterly hurt" by his firing. He said he felt better when he got home Friday night and found that the team had toilet-papered his home and put up a sign on his door with a three-word message: "We love you."

Resler, incidentally, is a tax professor at the UW, it's not like he needs the job or has aspirations of becoming a college coach. We think we can rule out any blatant cheating like we saw at Sealth.

Resler supporters are making rumblings about legal action, so we suppose the truth will eventually come out.

Of course, whether this is the result of a rule-breaking coach or a power-grabbing administrator, it's the players who are getting their season ruined. Ah well, it's a good life lesson to learn: Shit flows downhill.

    Thanks.

Entire offending passage--deleted! Right you are...and, to add to the confusion, a different Mike Kelly was boys coach at Seattle Prep...and isn't Michael Scott the boss on The Office?

  • TheTruthHurts

Mike Scott and Mike Kelly are two completely different people.

Mike Scott IS Roosevelt's athletic director.

Mike Kelly was the AD at Stealth.

You cannot just change their names as you have done above because that still leaves it wrong.

  • Seth

Sorry TruthHurts, I was mimicking the Times', which said Kelly, not Scott. Should've checked the RHS staff page, which shows Michael Scott as the AD and Michael Kelly as an asst. principal.

  • partyfernandez

honestly, Scott and Kelly are practically the same name.

  • TheTruthHurts

You have your facts all wrong.

    1. Mike Scott is the athletic director at Roosevelt, not Mike Kelly.

    2. Principal Vance is not telling parents the reason for the termination. He has (as far as I know), never told any parent it was because of offseason practices.

    3. Is it not somewhat biased for you to describe him as "beloved?" Go find a player from the last five years who would agree with you on that. I dare you.

    4. Go find a present player who would say their season has been ruined because of this. Words like revived come more quickly to mind.
