Sunday morning we were looking for a top-of-
Capitol-Hill brunch alternative -- we've overdone
Coastal Kitchen. Now everything tastes the same to us there, plus we've never been a fan of their hashbrowns. We walked down to
Volunteer Park Cafe, but it was overrun by middle-aged men in lycra biking gear, which is not really appropriate apparel for breakfast, guys, if you're wondering. And then we had a brainstorm: why not try
Kingfish? We've been for dinner many times, but never for brunch -- because we're fools, apparently. We were seated right away. The Creole eggtorte with andouille sausage was savory, fluffy, and right-sized. Only the biscuit on the side evidenced some of that Mega-Giganto serving-size you see at Kingfish (especially with dessert, which kills us because we get all competitive with the strawberry shortcake, like it's Everest or something).
We hadn't been to the Twilight Exit since they moved across the street to the other side of Madison. We weren't mad at them, we just had moved ourselves at the same time, and they weren't as close. But last Friday we stopped in and had some of the best fish and chips that we've ever had in Seattle -- wonderful golden brown, Guiness-battered fish and chips that leave your fingers shiny and your digestive system well-oiled. Yelpers like the joint, too. We'd been on a run of terrible gooey, breaded fish and chips that left us so nauseous it put us off our Guinness; it was good to see someone still knows how to make this essential pub dish.
+1 on Twilight Exit
Happy hour until 8pm means I don't have to skip work to enjoy cheap(er) beer! Now if someone could fix the Tetris joystick...
Lunch today with table of foodies, all gaga over Kingfish.
Yes, I've been meaning to say something about the roaming cyclist gang. Since you only mention in passing as convenient lede and disturbing picture (nice work!), that leaves an entire post for me to pick up the thread. You'll also find the lycra crew at Tully's which is another reason not to frequent. As for Kingfish, duh. But it's only the 2nd best brunch on 19th Ave.
J, those cyclists! Man, it was like the Wild Ones. We came in the door and immediately the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife, moms holding their children, babies sobbing. We halted and backed slowly out without attracting their attention, holding our breath until we made it to the sidewalk, and then we just sprinted back up 19th.
You can probably tell, I'm still shaken.
Being there before the cyclists is, indeed, disturbing. But showing up directly after they have left a table is truly traumatic. Two words:
SADDLE SWEAT
Appetizing, no?
I love Kingfish. Every time I visit Seattle I make my friends take me there.
jseattle: What's the best brunch on 19th St?
Monsoon -- Capitol Hill Seattle and Jasmine from Pike/Pine can't be wrong
Wow. Just wow. So typical Seattle to hate on cyclists just for eating somewhere. Why don't you all just get back into your SUVs and start leaving your obese Sasquatch carbon footprints all over someone else's city???
